Influence Of Diet On The Characteristics Of Eggs And Growth Of Progeny In Single Comb White Leghorn Pullets, Poonamalle Kothandaraman Dec 1963

Influence Of Diet On The Characteristics Of Eggs And Growth Of Progeny In Single Comb White Leghorn Pullets, Poonamalle Kothandaraman

Masters Theses

The objectives of this study were:

1. To determine the effects of feeding 13 percent protein diets, with varying energy levels, to Single Comb White Leghorn pullets, upon certain egg quality characteristics, hatchability, chick growth and mortality.

2. To determine the effect of egg size on hatching, two, and four-week body weights of Single Comb Leghorn chicks hatched from the eggs of pullets fed 13 percent protein diets with varying energy levels.

Genotype And Variability In Dairy Lactation Records, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. R. Barr Nov 1963

Genotype And Variability In Dairy Lactation Records, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. R. Barr

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

In quantitative genetics, the variation of individuals within genetic groups is commonly attributed to environment. The assumption is then made that the environmental variances are similar from one group to another. Complications arise in the application of selection index theory when this assumption is not made. The results reported here indicate that in a population of dairy records, the environmental variance is not similar from one genetic group to another. Johnson (1945) and Wadell, Van Vleck and Henderson (1960) found similar results with fewer data.

Mites On Kangaroo Rats At The Nevada Test Site, Morris A. Goates

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

A systematic study of parasitic mites on kangaroo rats of two species at the Nevada Test Site was conducted from August 1959 to December 1961. The intent was to determine the kinds, numbers, seasonal occurrences and ecological relationships of mites in nuclear disturbed and contiguous undisturbed areas. A total of 1,256 rats from nine plant communities was examined.

The 6,208 mites collected represented 16 species including four undescribed. Fourteen were found on both kinds of rats. Considerably more rats were infested with chiggers than with mesostigmatids. Each species of mite occurred alone on its host at least 20% of the …

Rhynchocoela: Nemerteans From Marine And Estuarine Waters In Virginia, William E. Mccaul

VIMS Articles

This paper presents twenty-two species of nemerteans collected from various habitats in the York River, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Eastern Shore of Virginia during the summer of l962. For the presentation of supplementary descriptions, this number includes those already reported from the Chesapeake area (Ferguson and Jones, 1949) , besides seventeen species not previously reported from this region and two newly described species.

Solpugida Of The Nevada Test Site, Martin Hammond Muma Aug 1963

Solpugida Of The Nevada Test Site, Martin Hammond Muma

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

Study of nearly 1,000 specimens of solpugids collected in 1960, 1961, and 1962 from Mercury, Nevada, resulted in the identification and placement of 395 adults in 28 species. Eight new species are described and figured. Two new synonymies, resulting from proper association of males and females, are cited. Study of the seasonal distribution and relative abundance of the sexes of 12 common species has prompted general and specific deductions concerning the essentially unknown biology of North American solpugids. Systematic collection data furnished ecological information concerning the 12 common species.

A Comparative Study Of The Osteology And Myology Of The Hind Limb Of The Pocket Gopher And Kangaroo Rat, Nancy S. Price Jul 1963

A Comparative Study Of The Osteology And Myology Of The Hind Limb Of The Pocket Gopher And Kangaroo Rat, Nancy S. Price

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare the morphology of the hind limb of the pocket gopher with that of the kangaroo rat and to determine their differences. This was accomplished by first, obtaining the specimens; second, preparation of the specimens for preservation and dissection; third, photographing and tracing the muscles; fourth, noting the origin and insertion of each muscle and their general morphology; and fifth, preparation and photographing of the bones. Comparative volumetric measurements were made of the muscles of the two animals to determine the differences between them. These two families, Geomyidae and Heteromyidae, are closely related …

A Study Of The Morphology And Systematics Of The Genera Polydrusus And Scythropus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Gary L. Jensen Jul 1963

A Study Of The Morphology And Systematics Of The Genera Polydrusus And Scythropus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Gary L. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this study were 1) to further clarify the status of the genera Polydrusus and Scythropus and 2) to redescribe and elucidate the morphology and distribution of the species of Scythropus in order to better facilitate their identification. Some 1650 specimens were used in the study and about 300 of these were critically examined for morphological variations of the head, beak, antennae, thorax, elytra, abdomen, integument, legs, genitalia, and eighth tergite and ninth segment of the male. Over one hundred genitalia were dissected and critically examined for good characters. The male genitalia were the most reliable single characters …

Parasitic Mites Of Kangaroo Rats Of The Nevada Atomic Test Site, Morris A. Goates Jun 1963

Parasitic Mites Of Kangaroo Rats Of The Nevada Atomic Test Site, Morris A. Goates

Theses and Dissertations

A systematic study of parasitic mites on kangaroo rats at the Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada, was conducted from August, 1959, to December, 1961. The intent was to determine their kinds, numbers, seasonal occurrence, and ecological relationship with Dipodomys merriami merriami Mearns and Dipodomys microps occidentalis Hall and Dale in nuclear disturbed and contiguous undisturbed areas. Study areas were established in three major valleys -- Jackass Flats, Yucca Flat, and F renchman Flat.
