Noteworthy Record Of The Mediterranean Water Shrew (Neomys Anomalus) From South-Western Iran (Mammalia: Soricomorpha), Hamid Reza Esmaeili, Ghorbanali Gholamhosseini, Azad Teimory, Boris Krystufek

Three water shrew specimens were collected in the Sheshpir spring (2303 m a.s.l.), Fars province, south-western Iran. In pennial morphology, which is species-specific in the genus Neomys Kaup, 1829, the specimens were indistinguishable from N. anomalus Cabrera, 1907. The Sheshpir spring is located approximately 900 km to the south-south-west of Gorgan, the only site in Iran where N. anomalus has been known to occur so far. The spring is a stony basin with bare banks and poorly developed aquatic vegetation and as such is an atypical habitat for water shrews. It is noteworthy that fish are absent in the spring.

Faunistic data of 39 species belonging to the tribe Cryptini from Cryptinae subfamily were studied. All species were collected from Isparta and surrounding districts between 2001 and 2004. General distribution of each species was given. Among them, 9 species noted in the text by asterisk are new records for the Turkish fauna.

This study was based on 1627 specimens belonging to 12 species and 1 subspecies of 8 genera in 7 families of the infraorders Gerromorpha and Leptopodomorpha of the order Heteroptera. The specimens were collected from Southwest Anatolia (provinces Antalya, Burdur, Isparta, Denizli, Aydın, and Muğla) during 2000-2002. Eleven species and 1 subspecies of these are the first records for this area. These species are Mesovelia vittigera (Mesovelidae), Hebrus pusillus (Hebridae), Hydrometra stagnorum (Hydrometridae), Velia affinis filippii, V. caprai (Veliidae), Aquarius paludum, Gerris argentatus, G. costae, G. lacustris (Gerridae), Saldula pallipes, S. saltatoria (Saldidae), and Leptopus marmoratus (Leptopodidae). The biology, nymphal stages, and life habits of the endemic dune cricket Schizodactylus inexpectatus (Werner, 1901) (Orthoptera: Schizodactylidae) were investigated in this study carried out between 2000 and 2007 in the Çukurova delta (Adana province) and in Alata (Mersin province), Turkey. The study showed that S. inexpectatus, which is a nocturnal insect, passes through 9 nymphal stages, each characterised by its own body size. The present study showed that certain properties of burrows, such as their depths, do not depend on either adult or immature stages of the insect. In this study nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) of Acomys cilicicus were examined. The karyotype of A. cilicicus is composed of 2n = 36, FN = 70, and FNa = 66. Ag-NORs are located on the terminal region of the long arm of chromosome 5 and, as a secondary constriction, on the long arm of chromosome 6 in this species. All the NORs are homomorphic and large-sized.

In this study, 510 samples of Capoeta trutta living in Karakaya Dam Lake were studied. After determining sex distribution, size (length and weight), growth rates, and growth conditions factors of 210 C. trutta specimens were examined. The number of female and male specimens was 104 and 106, respectively. The age of females and males ranged between 1-7 and 0-7 years, respectively. The age-length, age-weight, and length-weight curves were constructed. Aspects of the ecology, karyology, and taxonomic status of the Egyptian fruit bat, Rousettus aegyptiacus, in the Mediterranean region of Turkey were investigated based on 41 specimens obtained between 1977 and 2003. Distribution, external and cranial morphometrics, pelage coloration, baculum morphology, karyology, colony size, roosting and feeding ecology, and conservation and management issues were recorded. The fruit bat in Turkey is represented by the nominate subspecies, R. a. aegyptiacus. Sexual dimorphism was recorded in pelage coloration and morphometric data. The authors investigated the occurrence of fungi and fungus-like organisms (chromistan organisms) growing on dead Moina macrocopa specimens in 3 bodies of water of varied trophicity. Dead specimens of the crustacean Moina macrocopa, fish feed in aquaculture in countries of the Mediterranean basin, were used as bait. In all, 55 species were identified on the Moina macrocopa specimens, including 42 chromistan organisms and 13 fungus species. Of the 42 chromistan organisms, 13 are known as parasites or necrotrophs of fish species. In this study, 4 experimental groups and 1 control group containing adult mice (Mus musculus var. albinos) were used to examine the effects of 2 different cadmium compounds, namely cadmium para hydroxybenzoate, which was newly synthesized, and cadmium chloride on the liver of mice. In various test concentrations, both cadmium compounds were intraperitoneally injected into adult mice every day for 15 days. With standard histological techniques samples were obtained from the livers of the mice. Slides were prepared and examined with light microscopy (Nikon Eclipse E600) and histopathological structures were observed.

The Ichneumonidae species associated with Umbelliferae plants in Palandöken Mountains in Erzurum were investigated between July 1996 and August 1997. Among the 5 plant species, Seselis libanotis and Carum carvi were more attractive for ichneumonid species than the rest of the species. The first one was visited by 13 ichneumonid species with 109 individuals and the second one was visited by 9 species with 220 individuals. All these plant species could be accepted good nectar reservoir for ichneumonids.

In this study, the nesting site characteristics and nest densities of ardeids (grey heron: Ardea cinerea; night heron: Nycticorax nycticorax, and little egret: Egretta garzetta) were investigated in Nallıhan Bird Sanctuary. It was found that the site of breeding colony had 166 trees consisting of willows (92) and poplars (74); 105 of which (63 willow and 42 poplar) were found occupied by ardeid nests. In the present study, mitochondrial DNA sequences from the cytochrome b (cytb) gene were examined to assess the genetic diversity of sardines inhabiting Turkish coastal waters. The present study examined the effects of nitrate on the tadpoles of 2 ranid frogs (Nyctibatrachus major and Fejervarya limnocharis) studied under laboratory conditions. Tadpoles of these species were exposed to ecologically relevant concentrations of nitrates (0, 100, 2500, and 5000 µg NO_{3}-N l^{-1}). Upon exposure tadpoles of N. major showed protruded mouth, swollen body and head, paralysis, lateral and vertical swimming, restlessness, and wriggling movement. Tadpoles of F. limnocharis showed swollen body and head, bent tail, paralysis, restlessness, depigmentation, and intestinal hemorrhage. The karyotypes of 2 bat species from Iran were examined. The diploid number of chromosomes (2n) and the fundamental numbers of chromosomal arms (NFa) were determined to be 2n = 44 and NFa = 54 for Myotis blythii and 2n = 46 and NFa = 50 for Miniopterus schreibersii, respectively. The karyotypes of Iranian bats show similarity within populations in other countries with respect to the diploid chromosome numbers; however, they are quite different in the fundamental chromosome numbers and the numbers of autosomal arms.

Developmental time, predation, and reproduction of Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot from Hatay on a diet of Tetranychus cinnabarinus Boisduval larvae and protonymphs at temperatures of 20, 25, and 30 °C (75% ± 10% RH and a 14:10-h L:D (light:dark) cycle) were studied. P. persimilis females feeding on T. cinnabarinus larvae completed development in 8.12, 5.79, and 3.88 days at 20, 25, and 30 °C, respectively, during which time the females consumed on average 16.10, 16.09, and 17.18 T. cinnabarinus larvae, respectively. The results of an earthworm survey of 11 different localities in the city of İzmir (Turkey) are presented. The samples were collected by digging and hand sorting. The 3 following species belonging to 3 different genera were identified in the studied regions: Allolobophora chlorotica, Aporrectodea caliginosa trapezoides and Dendrobaena veneta. In addition, juvenile specimens representing the genera Dendrobaena, Lumbricus, and Allolobophora were collected.

In this study 387 Odonata specimens were collected and identified from the vicinity of streams and puddles in Kurupelit, Samsun, Turkey, between May and October 2002-2005. In all, 27 species from 17 genera belonging to 9 families were identified, 9 of which (Coenagrion scitulum, Ischnura elegans ebneri, Aeshna affinis, Aeshna isosceles antehumeralis, Anax parthenope, Hemianax ephippiger, Libellula depressa, Libellula fulva, and Orthetrum brunneum) are new records for the Odonata fauna of Samsun. This study includes faunistic and distributional records of the 27 species.

A total of 1527 of poor cod (Trisopterus minutus Linn., 1758) were collected by trawl hauls between April 2001 and March 2002 from İzmir Bay (central Aegean Sea). The size of the fish (total length) ranged from 10.6 cm (minimum, September) and 24.8 cm (April). The population was composed of 53% males, 41% females, and 6% immature individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1:1.3. The age composition of the samples was from I to V. The Greater Noctule, Nyctalus lasiopterus, was recorded from southwestern Turkey for the third time. The dorsal fur of the Greater Noctule, which also covers the underpart of the wing membrane, along with the forearm and propatagium, is uniformly dark brown. The cranium shows typical characteristics of the noctule bats. In addition to these, the exoccipital is convex and is markedly visible in the planar view of the skull. The present study provides data on the abundance of syntopic southern crested newts, Triturus karelinii, and banded newts, Triturus vittatus, in Uludağ National Park. The population of T. karelinii was 275 ± 60.9 (95% CI = 138-413) in Kirazlıyayla and 424 ± 85.6 (95% CI = 212-636) in Sarıalan. The populations of T. vittatus in Kirazlıyayla and Sarıalan were 392 ± 85.6 (95% CI = 196-588) and 158 ± 37.9 (95% CI = 79-237), respectively. Pellets of the Pharaoh Eagle Owl Bubo ascalaphus were collected from Azraq Nature Reserve in the Eastern Desert of Jordan. Analysis of the content of the owl pellets yielded the remains of 107 individuals of prey representing 15 different species. Based on the numbers of individual prey items, 13.1% was represented by 3 insectivores (Hemiechinus aff. auritus, Crocidura suaveolens, and Suncus etruscus) and 73.8% by 4 rodents (Mus aff. musculus, Meriones libycus, Gerbillus nanus, and Jaculus jaculus). Rotifera species collected from a pool (Çeltikli village, Bismil, Diyarbakır) 22 km from Bismil to Batman were surveyed taxonomically. Eighteen rotifer species were identified. Two of these species, Sinantherina semibullata (Thorpe, 1889) and Cephalodella megalocephala (Glasscott), 1893, as well as the genus Sinantherina Bory de St. Vincent, 1826, are new records for the Turkish rotifer fauna.

This study was carried out in 2005. The larvae, virgin, and adult females of Parthenolecanium persicae, and larvae of Eupeodes corollae were collected from almond tree plantations in the province of Diyarbakir, Turkey, during May and June, and brought to the laboratory for rearing. P. persicae was determined as a new host of E. corollae.

Some specimens of Torymidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) were collected in Turkey, one of which belongs to Idarnotorymus Masi, 1916 (Torymidae: Toryminae) as a new species, I. burdurensis, and is described from Burdur province. The diagnostic characters of the genus and the new species are reviewed, and photographs and line drawings of I. burdurensis are presented.

Dorcatherium majus is one of the 4 Asian species of Dorcatherium found in the Siwaliks of Pakistan. Many fossiliferous sites in the Lower and Middle Siwaliks of Pakistan (Middle and Late Miocene) were visited in the last 14 years and many specimens of D. majus were found. Some specimens are well preserved and some are in a poor state of preservation. Among the collected specimens, 8 were included in this study due to their good preservation. All the selected specimens belong to the lower dentition of D. majus and document intraspecific size variation.

Currently, amphibian decline is accepted as a global problem. One of the most important proposed causes for the decline is the use of agrochemicals, especially pesticides. Nevertheless, information about the impact of pesticides on amphibian populations remains scarce. The present study sought to identify the effects of malathion, an organophosphorus insecticide, on 21^{st} stage larvae of the marsh frog, Rana ridibunda, with an acute toxicity test using a static system.
