A Study Of Defensive Mechanisms Employed By Two Species Of Nudibranchs Using Toxicity And Unpalatability Analyses, Sean Youn

Nudibranchs are marine invertebrates that have developed an intriguing defense mechanism, including warning coloration and the use of chemicals accumulated through their sponge diet. The goal of this study was to determine whether the strength of chemical defenses differs between dietary and accumulated secondary metabolites for two species: Glossodoris vespa and Ceratosoma brevicaudatum. First, NMR spectroscopy was used to not only identify specific compounds in the mantle (outer covering) and the viscera (gut) but also to analyze the possibility of nudibranch species transporting more toxic compounds for defensive purposes. Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is an infectious virus in domestic chickens and is endemic in many countries. It has caused huge economic losses worldwide, especially in developing countries where the chickens and eggs are a primary source of economic income and family nutrition for the rural poor. Due to continuous evolution of NDV and unreliable vaccine production and distribution in developing countries, vaccine cannot prevent recurrent outbreaks of Newcastle disease. Therefore, breeding for NDV resistant chickens is a sustainable approach for alleviating rural poverty and food insecurity.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of mild heat stress on muscle fiber hyperplastic and hypertrophic growth in quail primary myogenic cells to better understand the mechanisms leading to increased skeletal muscle development in avian embryos incubated at a higher temperature. Compared to control cultures maintained at 37°C, incubation at 39°C enhanced myotube length (P < 0.01) and diameter (P < 0.001) at 3 days after differentiation (D3). Prolonged exposure to high temperature can significantly increase metabolism, depress appetite, reduce meat production and raise mortality in broilers. Because the cardiovascular system plays an important role to dissipate heat and transport oxygen, strong cardiac function is indispensable for birds to survive under heat stress. However, due to small hearts relative to body weight, modern broilers have high risk of heart failure at high temperature.
