University Of Nebraska Board Of Regents/ Academic Affairs Committee: Engagement With Community, John Owens Dec 2001

University Of Nebraska Board Of Regents/ Academic Affairs Committee: Engagement With Community, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

Board of Regents and President Smith: It's a real pleasure to be able to discuss the University's role in engagement with you today on behalf of the four campuses that comprise the University of Nebraska.
In preparing this presentation I've drawn heavily upon the Kellogg Commission's report, entitled: "Returning to our Roots - The Engaged Institution," and the Michigan State University guidebook for planning-and-evaluating quality outreach, which is entitled: "Points of Distinction." I think both publications offer valuable insights as we explore the University's role as an engaged-partner with Nebraska.

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

I’m so pleased to be here with you today, and I look forward to visiting and working with members of this group now and in the future. Since arriving in Nebraska nearly a year ago now on a snowy, blustery day, I’ve been delighted to take every opportunity that comes my way to get to know Nebraska and Nebraskans better. I want to know what you think are Nebraska’s greatest needs, now and in the future. I want to know how you think the University of Nebraska Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources can help meet those needs. I seek …

Football Pregame, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

Good afternoon! I am John Owens, and it is my good fortune to be Vice President and Vice Chancellor of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Chancellor Harvey Perlman certainly regrets that he cannot be present at today’s pregame reception. His daughter is being recognized at Ak-Sar-Ben in Omaha, and he’s celebrating this very special occasion with his family.
And speaking of family, I would like to introduce my wife, Dr. Virginia Owens. This probably is the right time for me to confess that both Virginia and I are graduates of Texas Tech. Now, we want everyone to know that “alumni loyalty” …

The Land Grant University Movement And Ianr: Animal Science Seminar Series, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

"The problems that exist in the world today cannot be solved by the level of thinking we were at when we created them."

That quote, attributed to Albert Einstein, epitomizes for me the importance of land grant universities in the 21 st century, and whenever I hear someone say that land grants are obsolete - which, occasionally, I do hear - I want to pull that quote out and say "here - read this." When all the problems in the world have been solved, then - and only then - will land grant universities be obsolete. Maybe. I'm …

What Is Higher Education?, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

"The problems that exist in the world today cannot be solved by the level of thinking we were at when we created them." - Albert Einstein

What is higher education? It is a key tool to our gaining the level of thinking Einstein describes - the level of thinking needed to solve the problems that exist in the world today. I am not saying higher education is the only thing that prepares people to think - far from it. But higher education, if it does what it is meant to do, prepares us with a solid base of …

Master Conservationist Presentations - 2001, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

We begin the 2001 Master Conservationist program with honorees in production agriculture from District A which includes the Panhandle of Nebraska. I would like to ask Leon and Cheryl Burkhart-Kriesel (Kresel) of Gurley who are unable to be present. They operated the family farm in partnership with Fred and Viola Kriesel until 1984 when Leon and Cheryl become sole owners/operators. The Kriesels produce certified wheat, millet, oats, and barley seed on 3200 dryland acres that are owned, rented, or contracted. Since 1984, 45,000 feet of terraces have been installed. Their holistic conservation plan also includes over 57,000 feet of windbreaks …

Nebraska Lead Xxi Fellow/Spouses Dinner, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character give him power.”

That quote, by my hero Abraham Lincoln, is one I think all leaders should remember and reflect on regularly in their life, and so I pass it on to each of you. I wish each member of this LEAD group the character to use power wisely, with compassion and integrity, and a strong-sense of justice and fair play.

Some of them will come looking for mentors; some will find mentors they didn’t even know they sought.

I consider it a real pleasure to have this opportunity to join Chuck Hibberd and all who are part of the University of Nebraska Panhandle Research and Extension Center in welcoming you here.

I'm delighted to join you here at the Panhandle center for several reasons. First off, I …

I hope you all had the opportunity to see the first issue of University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension’s Connect newsletter. It contains a quote that strikes me as so powerful that I can’t imagine there is a single extension-specialist or educator in this state who wouldn’t walk around with a big grin on their faces because of this wonderful comment.

Good afternoon, and thank you for inviting me to be here with you today. One of the things I'm enjoying most in my new position as University of Nebraska Vice President of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Harlan Vice Chancellor of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources is meeting the people who live in this state, in urban and rural areas, from Scottsbluff to Omaha, from Lincoln to Curtis, and at any number of towns - north, south, east, west - in between.

Nebraska Agricultural Leadership Council, John Owens Mar 2001

Nebraska Agricultural Leadership Council, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

That quote by the late anthropologist Margaret Mead seems especially fitting to me tonight as I look out at all of you. People who are committed to leadership in agriculture and in Nebraska. People with vision and creativity who give of your time and talents to preserve, to strengthen, and to move forward those things in which you believe. People determined to succeed.
