Genetic Studies Of Winter Hardiness In Barley, C. R. Rohde, C. F. Pulham Dec 1960

Genetic Studies Of Winter Hardiness In Barley, C. R. Rohde, C. F. Pulham

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

An important obstacle toward the development of winter barley varieties with a higher level of winter hardiness has been the deficiency of genetic information on this character. The primary objective of these studies was to obtain information on the genetics of the winter hardiness of a group of 18 winter barley varieties which originated from widely different geographic areas of the world. It was hoped that this information might be helpful in determining whether or not it would be possible for barley breeders to combine different genetic sources of winter hardiness and attain a higher level of hardiness than presently …

Interregional Competition In Alfalfa Seed Production In The United States, Charles H. Benrud Sep 1960

Interregional Competition In Alfalfa Seed Production In The United States, Charles H. Benrud

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

“Northern” alfalfa, produced in South Dakota and its neighboring states, has long been noted for its hardy winter-resistant qualities. As a result, for many years its seed was sought after by farmers in all of the northern states in preference to any other. In recent years, however, new "synthetic" varieties have been developed. Certified seed of these varieties has been produced in large quantities in other parts of the United States and sold in competition with Northern seed. In an effort to help Northern producers solve their problems, research has been carried on by the South Dakota State College Agricultural …

Least-Cost Sites For Cooperative Egg Marketing Federations For Eastern South Dakota, John S. Arnold Aug 1960

Least-Cost Sites For Cooperative Egg Marketing Federations For Eastern South Dakota, John S. Arnold

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Traditional outlets for South Dakota eggs, outside the Midwest, are being offered greater supplies of quality eggs by nearby producers than before. As a result. South Dakota has lost much of its Eastern market and may lose its Western market. A number of cooperative associations have expressed an interest in developing more efficient egg marketing systems. Improved cooperative marketing would create increased bargaining power and higher net returns for many producers. Cooperatives have played an important function in South Dakota egg marketing for many years. Cooperatives in other parts of the country have formed federations to increase cooperative egg marketing …

Comparisons Of The Profitability Of Certified And Uncertified Alfalfa Seed Production In South Dakota, Arnold Lyle Aspelin Aug 1960

Comparisons Of The Profitability Of Certified And Uncertified Alfalfa Seed Production In South Dakota, Arnold Lyle Aspelin

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Alfalfa is one of the most important crops grown in South Dakota. Approximately two per cent of the total alfalfa acreage harvested for seed in South Dakota during recent years has produced certified seed. The other 98 percent has produced uncertified seed, commonly referred to as "Northern" alfalfa seed. Until 1952, uncertified Northern alfalfa seed found a ready market in areas where winter hardiness is necessary. Since that time the demand for this seed has declined markedly. The problem which has arisen requires an answer to the question: "Can South Dakota seed producers obtain greater net returns by producing certified …

B593: Handling And Processing Broilers In Maine: Part Ii—Quality Losses In Live Broilers, And Methods Of Handling To Reduce Bruising And To Improve Efficiency, Lloyd J. Jewett, Richard Saunders

Bulletins

The time spent in getting broilers from the farm to the processing plant is a brief interval, yet it is during this period that most bruising occurs. Bruising lowers the quality of birds. This study from 1960 looks at the cause and amount of quality losses in broilers when they are moved from the farm to the plant; devises methods of reducing quality losses and improving labor efficiency, and evaluates the economic significance of these methods.

Farm Business Management Data And Practices: 1958 Annual Report, Charles H. Benrud, Arnold Aspelin

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

This pamphlet is the annual summary of Economic Project 264, '"Farm Business Management Data and Practices in South Dakota," for 1958, the third full year of its operation. A total of 53 cooperators turned in records for summary and analysis. The purpose of this project is to obtain data on costs, returns and organization on a few farms and ranches of various types in the different types of farming areas in the state. This information is used by the Experiment Station, the Extension Service, and the State College proper, in farm planning, budgeting, and teaching. It can also be of …

Studies Into Some Physiological Relationships Between Dodder (Cuscuta, Spp.) And Alfalfa, Harold Edward Pattee May 1960

Studies Into Some Physiological Relationships Between Dodder (Cuscuta, Spp.) And Alfalfa, Harold Edward Pattee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In recent years the weed commonly known as dodder has become an important reason for the rejection of several alfalfa seed fields for certification in Utah. The rapid spread of infestation in alfalfa seed fields, difficulty in removing the dodder seed from the alfalfa seed due to the similarity in size, and a lack of adequate control are among the main causes for the rising concern with dodder, Dodder is an annual which reproduces from seed each year.

The Inhibitory Effects Of Tarweed Upon The Germination And Growth Of Seedlings, Glenn F. Carnahan May 1960

The Inhibitory Effects Of Tarweed Upon The Germination And Growth Of Seedlings, Glenn F. Carnahan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Extensive areas of potentially productive but depleted range land in the United States are occupied by a weed commonly known aa cluster tarweed (Madia glomerata). Moat attempts at seeding these areas to useful forage plants have resulted in failure. Many of these failures have been attributed to the vigorous competitive growth of tarweed plants. More recent observations of seedings in tarweed areas and laboratory work at the University of Utah indicate that tarweed is not only a strong competitor but may also produce substances which inhibit the germination and growth of other species of plants.

B592: Handling And Processing Broilers In Maine: Part 1—Costs And Efficiencies In Assembling Live Broilers For Processing, Lloyd J. Jewett

Bulletins

Processor-truckers are faced with the problem of how to move live broilers from the farm to the plant at lower cost and with less bruising. This study from 1960 was designed (1) to determine the costs and man-hour requirements for assembling live broilers, (2) to determine the importance of factors affecting assembly costs and labor requirements, and (3) to find ways of improving present conditions. An attempt was made to measure the effect of various types of broiler houses, load-out facilities, flock size and distance from farm to plant. Also an attempt was made to determine the effect of assembly …
