This paper discusses the process of developing variable-rate treatment prescriptions and gives specifications for a prototype software system for implementing that process. The process is based on statistical analysis of data from embedded field trials, and incorporates producer preferences in determining a treatment prescription. The system can be used by researchers in agricultural research stations for developing prescriptions for commercial agricultural producers. The specifications provided are general enough to be implemented using a variety of statistical and database packages that are available to researchers. Regressions such as Grain yield=f(soil,landscape) are frequently reported in precision agriculture research, and are typically computed using conventional OLS methods, implicitly ignoring spatial correlation of the residuals. This oversight can have a marked effect on the final conclusions derived from these regressions. A further issue is, which approach should be used to account for this problem? We investigated this question using a 2 year data set that includes sitespecific soil and topographic information and soybean yields and compare regression results from direct covariance representation and spatial autoregressive approaches. A scouting protocol for cotton insect pests was developed which combines high resolution, multispectral remotely sensed imagery with a belt transect that crosses rows of cotton. Imagery was used to determine sample site selection while estimating plant bug abundance in a more than 200 ac. cotton field in 1997. Tarnished plant bug (Lygus lineolaris) counts were acquired using a standard drop cloth for each of eight rows along a transect. The sample data indicated that plant bug population densities spatially vary as a function of different spectral (color) classes present on the imagery. We postulate that such classified …
