This is the sixth report of results from an International Winter Wheat Performance Nursery (IWWPN) organized in 1968 by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and the Agricultural Research Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture, under a contract with the Agency for International Development, U.S. Department of State. The Nursery was designed to (1) test the adaptation of winter wheat cultivars in a range of latitudes, daylengths, fertility conditions, water management, and disease complexes; (2) identify superior winter cultivars to serve as recipient genotypes for high protein and high lysine genes, and (3) test the degree of expression and stability of …

Performance Of Certified Seed Lots Of Dawson Alfalfa, W. R. Kehr, G. R. Manglitz

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

Breeder, foundation, and certified seed lots of Dawson alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., were tested to determine stability in performance during three generations of seed increase under certification. Two field experiments were conducted, a seeded forage yield test and a space-planted test. Greenhouse experiments included separate tests for resistance to pea aphids, spotted alfalfa aphids, and bacterial wilt. Results obtained on certified Dawson alfalfa seed classes in field and greenhouse experiments were in agreement with the original variety description.

LEPIDOPTERA are divided into the major suborders Monotrysia and Ditrysia (Borner, 1939). The vast majority of Lepidoptera belong to the Ditrysia. The Noctuidae, which is the largest family in the order, is probably the most destructive (Metcalf, et aI., 1962). It includes Loxagrotis albicosta (Smith), the western bean cutworm, originally a pest of field beans, which has become a relatively serious pest of corn in southwestern and central Nebraska (Hagen and Roselle, 1972). Adults emerge from early July to late August, and eggs, which are deposited on the upper sides of corn leaves, hatch in approximately I week. The newly …

A D-Vac Calibration Technique, K. P. Pruess, R. W. Whitmore

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Removal samples from an irrigated pasture were used as a calibration technique for the D-Vac. Plots 4 m² were enclosed with a frame, and 1 initial and 3 removal samples were taken. Equations are given for computing the population and probability of collecting an insect. For leafhopper adults, leafhopper nymphs, Orius insidiosus (Say), and corn flea beetle, Chaetocnema pulicaria Melsheimer, calibrations (m²/linear m) were 0.405, 0.328, 0.272, and 0.490, respectively.

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Four trials were conducted to evaluate the supplemental value of feed grade biuret (in dry supplements) and urea (in liquid urea-molasses mixtures) when compared to natural protein and urea in dry supplements for beef cows grazing low quality dry winter range grass. Urea or feed grade biuret provided 50% of the nitrogen in 30% CP dry supplements and urea provided 50% of the nitrogen in 30% CP dry supplements and urea provided 94% of the nitrogen in 30% CP liquid supplements. Dry supplements were self-fed with salt added to limit intake.

In order to have a flavorful experience, the game animal must be handled, processed and prepared properly. If the game is improperly processed or handled, one may lose much of the desirable flavor and storage stability.

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Two winter trials were conducted with 304 lactating range cows on dry grass to evaluate non-protein-nitrogen (NPN) in 30% protein supplements containing biuret (pure and feed grade), urea and extruded grain-urea. The NPN sources contributed one-half of the supplemental nitrogen with natural 15 and 30% protein supplements serving as negative and positive controls.
Winter weight loss of cows was greater (P~.02) on the negative than on the positive control in both trials. The apparent utilization of all NPN sources was low and the utilization of urea and extruded grain-urea was less than pure or feed grade biuret. Rumen biuretolytic activity …

Throughout history, man has devised methods of contacting others who were out of voice range or who could not be heard because of excess noise. The Indians were skilled at using smoke signals or by imitating some form of wildlife such as the owl or coyote.
