Coping With Brown Spot And Root Rots Of Lupins, Mark Sweetingham Jan 1990

Coping With Brown Spot And Root Rots Of Lupins, Mark Sweetingham

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

There is increasing concern that brown spot and root diseases may limit the long term viability of lupin cultivation in close rotations in the agricultural areas of Western Australia. Research has found several useful strategies to reduce the impact of brown spot and Pleiochaeta root rot so that losses can be kept to a minimum. Rhizoctonia has proved more difficult to combat. Although less widespread than Pleiochaeta, it has caused severe losses and appears to be increasing in incidence, particularly in the northern wheatbelt. Research has vastly expanded our knowledge of the strains of Rhizoctonia present in our soils and …

Eradication Of The Liver Fluke In Dairy Cattle, Dave Muirson Jan 1990

Eradication Of The Liver Fluke In Dairy Cattle, Dave Muirson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

In July 1987, a meat inspector found liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) in a cow at an export abattoir at Waroona. This was the first evidence of the liver fluke completing its life cycle in Western Australia. Fortunately, the Department of Agriculture is reasonably confident that a comprehensive drenching programme has eradicated the liver fluke. The establishment of liver fluke in the south-west coastal areas could cause a serious problem for cattle producers and the small number of sheep producers. Stock would need additional drenching, and if it was not carried out effectively production could be lost or stock could die. …

Central Wheatbelt Grain Legume Development Extension Program : Fieldpeas And Lupins, E E. Rowley, I Pritchard Jan 1990

Central Wheatbelt Grain Legume Development Extension Program : Fieldpeas And Lupins, E E. Rowley, I Pritchard

Research Reports

The project aims to:

1) Collect integrate and extend to advisers, farmers and industry representatives technical information on field pea growing systems to optimize profit and reduce new enterprise failure risks.

2) Collect market and process information (prices and demand) for all types of field pea products, and to advise industry representatives and growers on the best options for the continued development of the field pea industry.

3) Identify areas within the field pea industry which require immediate research and industry action.

4) Conduct a field research programme on field pea agronomy within the central medium and high rainfall areas …

Economics Of Interceptor Drains : A Case Study, Andrew Bathgate, Ian Evans Jan 1990

Economics Of Interceptor Drains : A Case Study, Andrew Bathgate, Ian Evans

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

This case study determines the most likely rate of return to capital invested in constructing seepage interceptor drains to reduce the effect of waterlogging on crop and pasture yields. The analysis of a farm in the Denbarker region, west of Albany, determined what increases were needed in pasture growth to justify the cost of constructing drains across four adjacent paddocks. The benefits of changing rotations to include lupins were also determined, as growing lupins was unprofitable before the construction of drains.

Insect And Allied Pests Of Extensive Farming, W Woods, P Michael, M Grimm Jan 1990

Insect And Allied Pests Of Extensive Farming, W Woods, P Michael, M Grimm

Bulletins 4000 -

Produced in conjunction with the Plant Protection Society of WA. The Society is an organisation of farmers, scientists, commercial representatives and others interested in all aspects of plant protection. It provides essential liaison between farmers, industry & Government. It aims to inform members, Government, Industry and the public on: plant pest management and control, including weeds, insects, diseases and vertebrate and invertebrate pests, stored plant products protection, the importance of plant protection, pesticides and the environment, safe handling of pesticides; and pesticide application methods and technology.

Busselton, Margaret River, Augusta: Land Capability Study, Peter J. Tille, Neil Clifton Lantzke Jan 1990

Busselton, Margaret River, Augusta: Land Capability Study, Peter J. Tille, Neil Clifton Lantzke

Land resources series

The study was done to ensure that information on the area's land resource, and its capability, is available for land use planning. This information will assist planners to make decisions which can allow for the optimal development of the land while avoiding land degradation or land use conflicts. A map showing the distribution of land units defined according to soil type, topography, drainage and wind exposure was prepared at a scale of 1:50,000. From this map a smaller scale, less detailed land systems map was drawn. Land capability, the ability of land to sustain a specific use without undesirable on-site …

Spacing Water Points In The Southern Pastoral Areas Of Western Australia, Don Burnside, Adrian Williams, Peter Curry Jan 1990

Spacing Water Points In The Southern Pastoral Areas Of Western Australia, Don Burnside, Adrian Williams, Peter Curry

Bulletins 4000 -

An inadequate distribution of watering points in our pastoral lands, particularly in the saltbush/bluebush pasture, has caused localisized land degradation close to waters and reduced animal productivity (particularly in stressful times). From experimentation and observation, some generalised recommendations for water supply distribution in pastoral areas can be made.

Geraldton Rural-Residential Land Capability Study, R A. Dye, A M E Van Vreeswyk, Geoff Allan Moore Jan 1990

Geraldton Rural-Residential Land Capability Study, R A. Dye, A M E Van Vreeswyk, Geoff Allan Moore

Land resources series

With a growing population in the Geraldton area, there is a demand for rural and coastal subdivision to provide for rural residential development and intensification of agricultural activities. Future land use planning for land use change and management of land to overcome existing land degradation problems should be based on land capability. This study provides a semi-detailed (1:50,000) soil and landform inventory for the immediate zone around Geraldton, south from Coronation Beach to Cape Burney along the coast, 13.7 km inland in the north and 7.6 km inland in the south. Eight land systems were identified in the land resource …
