Durante el año 2010, el Instituto Nacional de Innovación y Transferencia en Tecnología Agropecuaria (INTA-Costa Rica), conjuntamente con el Programa Colaborativo y de Apoyo a la Investigación del Sorgo, el Mijo y otros Granos (INTSORMIL, CRSP) ubicado en El Salvador. elaboraron un proyecto de investigación para evaluar la adaptación, producción y valor nutritivo de una colección de 15 variedades de sorgo (Sorghum bicolor) para alimentación animal. Las variedades disponían del gen recesivo denominado BMR, siglas en inglés de "Brown mid rib" que significan "vena café" (Figura 1).

de Tecnologia Agropecuaria (INTA), the Collaborative Research Support Program for Sorghum, Millet and Other Grains (INTSORMIL) has released two new varieties of sorghum in Nicaragua that will be used for forage (plant material eaten by grazing livestock).
These new varieties exhibit the “brown midrib” trait (bmr), which has been used for many years by sorghum producers in the United States. The bmr trait increases the digestibility of sorghum by reducing the amount of lignin, a chemical compound found in the cell walls of plants. The more digestible sorghum is for the livestock that consume it, the higher the quality of …

The use of sorghum for human consumption to add value to the crop and increase its profitability, especially for small and medium producers, has contributed to food security and nutrition in El Salvador. CENTA is promoting the cultivation of sorghum as an alternative to food production in rural and urban areas. Rachel Opole grew up in Nairobi, Kenya’s capitol, and the K-State doctoral student developed an early interest in livestock and crop production. Those interests, largely influenced by her parents, inspired her desire to improve crops grown to feed people. To enhance her work in that area, Opole earned the Norman E. Borlaug Leadership Enhancement in Agriculture Program (LEAP) fellowship, administered by the University of California–Davis.

International efforts to aid food production in developing countries are based within the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
The International Sorghum and Millet Collaborative Research Support Program (INTSORMIL CRSP) was established at UNL’s East Campus in 1979. Its goal is to improve the devel- opment of sorghum, millet, and other grains in Central America and Africa, said John Yohe, director since 1988.

Short Heinrichs spoke to the Lincoln South Rotary Club in February 2010 about global food security. What is food security? The availability of food and access to it. Many countries have food available but the population has no access to it. Heinrichs gave the group some sobering statistics regarding hunger in the world. Nine hundred forty-seven million people in the world are undernourished. One hundred forty-six billion kids under age 5 are underweight. One in seven people are hungry, and one in six people do not have safe drinking water. Ten million kids die each year from hunger related causes. …

Horchata, tiste, atoles saborizados, poleadas, pudín, harina de afrecho, pan francés y dulce son productos elaborados a base de sorgo o maicillo y son mezclados con otros ingredientes, técnica impulsada por especialistas del laboratorio de alimentos del Centro Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria y Forestal (CENTA).
El proceso consiste en usar la harina sola de sorgo (100%) y mezclarla con otros cereales, rostizando el grano para la elaboración de bebidas o molido en seco para el desarrollo de otros productos.

Weighing in on crop production in West Africa might seem a bit of a stretch for a K-State agronomist; however, that’s not the case for Scott Staggenborg. He recently returned from his second visit to West Africa, where he reviewed sorghum research and crop production.
During the research trip to Tombouctou (also spelled Timbuktu), a West African city near the Niger River, he joined Malian researchers in exploring opportunities to improve sorghum production and management. Dr. John Yohe, INTSORMIL CRSP Program Director, has announced that the University of Nebraska (UNL) has been selected as the Management Entity for the new Sorghum/Millet and Other Grains CRSP. The award was based on national competition among U. S. universities. This CRSP is funded through a Leader with Associates Cooperative Agreement instrument as opposed to a grant under which INTSORMIL was funded since 1979.
