Food Waste At Retail, Erin G. Killeen Davis Jul 2015

Food Waste At Retail, Erin G. Killeen Davis

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Food waste at retail represents forgone sales and embodies store management and disposal costs. Fresh produce is the largest contributing sector to food waste at retail and bulky, seasonal products are an added challenge when stores experience a high waste event. In order to improve, retailers need to better understand the costs of food waste, as well as how management strategies can impact these costs.

Using pumpkins as an example of bulky, seasonal products, a twofold research project was conducted to better understand contributors to, and costs of food waste at the retail level. In part one, using data from …

Sustainable Agriculture In Vermont: Economics Of Climate Change Best Management Practices And The Complexity Of Consumer Perceptions Of Raw Milk, Alexander Paul Helling

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Changing weather patterns, the declining social fabric of rural communities, and economic uncertainty increasingly pose challenges to Vermont communities. The socially and environmentally embedded production practices within sustainable agriculture present a potential solution to these problems. In order to make the most of the potential benefits of these practices society must maximize their adoption. This requires an understanding of both farmer adoption of these practices and consumer perceptions of the resulting food products. This thesis contributes two original articles on sustainable agriculture through the analysis of factors driving both farmer adoption and consumer perceptions of products and practices often thought …

An Economic Analysis Of The Costs Of Alternative Sugarcane Fallow Weed Control Programs, José Rodolfo Mite Cáceres Jan 2010

An Economic Analysis Of The Costs Of Alternative Sugarcane Fallow Weed Control Programs, José Rodolfo Mite Cáceres

LSU Master's Theses

Economic research was conducted to present estimates of costs per acre associated with fallow sugarcane weed control programs for Louisiana in 2010. The 2010 projected costs are associated with the various phases of sugarcane fallow using different machinery, implements, and weed control practices followed by most growers in the main sugarcane production area of Louisiana. For bermudagrass and johnsongrass weed control treatments, the herbicides applied were Roundup Original Max at 46 oz/A, generic glyphosate at 64 oz/A, DuPont K4 60DG, Trifluralin 4EC at 4 qt/A, and EPTC at 3.5 pt/A. Purple nutsedge weed control treatments included Roundup Original Max at …

A Rate/Cost Analysis Of Nebraska Meat Trucking Activities With Livestock Trucking Cost Comparisons, Dale G. Anderson, Wayne W. Budt Mar 1975

A Rate/Cost Analysis Of Nebraska Meat Trucking Activities With Livestock Trucking Cost Comparisons, Dale G. Anderson, Wayne W. Budt

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

This study was designed to measure costs of long-distance shipment of meat by motor carrier. Costs were compared with published rates for meat shipments by truck, rail and trailer-on-flatcar (TOFC). Finally, meat trucking costs were compared with costs of trucking meat-equivalent amounts of livestock. Results of the study provide a partial basis for evaluating the economic merits of expanded livestock production activities in grain-surplus Great Plains locations. Such an expansion might aid in the economic development of the region and ease the chronic problem of rail freight-car supply. Proposals ranging from extension of present regulation to cover livestock trucking to …
