The major purpose of this study is to make additional information available to the farm manager to improve the decision-making process relating to corn silage production. This study is primarily concerned with factors that influence planting date and variety selection. With-in the framework of decision theory analysis, a Bayesian approach is employed to calculate the best time to plant and the best variety to plant. The approach is used both with and without the possible occurrence of harmful spring frosts. The "seventy growing degree day" method is employed as a criterion for planting date selection. Utah ranks seventh in production of wool in the United States. The states in their order are Texas, Wyoming, California, Colorado, Montana, South Dakota and Utah. Utah produced 11,445,000 pounds of wool in 1963, valued at $5,265,000.

Box Elder is the fifth ranking county in wool production in the state of Utah. The leading counties are Sanpete, Utah, Uintah, Iron and Box Elder. According to census data, Box Elder produced 547,600 pounds of wool in 1959 . Today profitable dry farming requires a considerable amount of machinery and equipment. Many farm management people, creditors in agriculture production and farmers themselves recognize that a high percentage of gross income is spent on machinery and equipment. machinery expense represents the largest expenditure on dryland farms in Box Elder County.

Farms in the county are relatively small, but even on the smaller farms most farmers have a complete line of farm machinery. In most cases, the machinery is not used anywhere near its maximum.
