A vigorous debate about whether sex by deception ought to be considered rape appears tohave caught the imagination of criminal law theorists and commentators in recent years. Thisdebate is by no means devoid of practical implications as shown by case law from variousjurisdictions which have had to grapple with the issue. This article sets out the approach taken inSingapore and suggests that it may offer a practical solution in this contentious area of criminallaw and the understanding of consent.

This Report focuses on the use of forensic procedures in the criminal justice system. It arises out of the requirement under section 122 of the Crimes (Forensic Procedures) Act 2000 (the Act) that the Minister (the Attorney General) review the Act to determine whether the policy objectives of the Act remain valid and whether the terms of the Act remain appropriate for securing those objectives.

The International Criminal Trial Project (ICTP) has been in operation within the Centre for Legal Research (CLR), Nottingham Law school since January 2000. To date the project has succeeded in establishing a global network of scholars researching international and comparative criminal justice. The ICTP examines and compares trial processes and practice in a variety of local, regional and global contexts. The research incorporates particular evaluations of issues and relationships essential to the operation of trial process in different jurisdictions and stages of development. This article examines the nature and prevalence of sexual harassment in the work environment, and compares civil and criminal law in Singapore to the approaches taken by various jurisdictions in dealing with the problem. It is submitted that legislation is needed to protect employees, as Singapore law currently does not present any clear and coherent means for victims to seek redress for workplace sexual harassment.

Equality is the thread running through the fundamental liberties enshrined in our Constitution. ... Equality, expressed in Art 12 of the [Singapore] Constitution, is also a specific right enforceable by the court. The difficulty comes in applying this deceptively simple concept to real-life situations. ... Despite the reality of partition that created "two Irelands," comparative analysis of the state's reactions to terrorism in the Province and in the Republic is rare. The struggle over reunification, which permeates society on both sides of the border, is usually viewed by the populist press not from the Irish viewpoint, but rather from the perspective of the British government. Given this bias, organized resistance -- most notably in the North of Ireland -- is represented as an assault on a majority-supported state. The legislative provisions which make it an offence to procure a miscarriage unlawfully or assist in the unlawful procurement are to be found in sections 58 and 59 or the Offences Against the Person Act 1861. In recent years the most common way for an Irish woman to obtain an abortion has been to leave the Republic and obtain such an operation in Britain, where the restrictions imposed on the medical profession with regard to performing operations are far less onerous. How then would the Irish courts view secondary parties to such extra-territorial activities?
