Cloud computing and software-as-a-service (SaaS) models are revolutionizing the information technology industry. As these services become more prevalent, data security and privacy concerns will also rise among consumers and the companies who consider using them. Cloud computing providers must establish a sufficient level of trust with their potential customers in order to ease initial fears - and ensure certain compliance obligations will be met - at least to the extent that any such inquiring customer will feel comfortable enough to ultimately take the irreversible step of releasing their sensitive data and personal information into the cloud.

It is widely believed in some Western circles that a single multilateral human rights treaty, based largely on European models for data protection, can standardize a right to privacy on a global basis. It is also widely believed that East Asia has no real tradition of privacy. Both of these beliefs are mistaken. This Article explores the underlying philosophical assumptions beneath Western concepts of privacy that currently prevail on both sides of the Atlantic, by examining privacy through the lens of classical Daoism and the Northeast Asian philosophical tradition. Thomas More in his conversation with Raphael Hythloday agreed with Plato that “nations will be happy, when either philosophers become kings, or kings become philosophers.” Some five hundred years following More’s sojourn to the New Isle of Utopia, the “philosophers” remain in search of a societal order that would appropriately reflect and encompass the humanity’s best social and political contrivances. This paper compares the institutions and goals of the USSR, the EU, and the CIS to understand the differing origins and competing tendencies of these alternative models of transnational governance. It then projects those models through history to examine the current relationships of the former Soviet Republics to the EU and the United States. Understanding the historical sources and development of transnational relations in Eastern Europe will enable better international relations among the EU, the Russian Federation, and the other former Soviet Republics. The advertisements you see while browsing the Internet are rarely accidental. For instance, Alliance Data, one of many new companies in the booming data-marketing industry, can instantaneously recognize that a user visiting their client’s website is Joel Stein, a thirty-nine year-old, college educated male, who makes over $125,000 a year. Alliance Data also knows that Joel is likely to make purchases online, but only spends about $25 dollars a purchase. Using this information, and the specifics of over 100 of Joel’s past online purchases, Alliance Data creates advertisements specifically tailored to Joel and displays them as he continues to browse …

Since the early 1990s, the world has seen a proliferation of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). One of the key objectives of FTAs is to expand trade between or amongst its signatories. This study explores the intra-FTA and extra-FTA trade expansion capability of 3 types of FTA: North-North FTA (European Union (EU)-15 as a representative), North-South FTA (North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) as a representative) and South-South FTA (Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN ) Free Trade Agreement (AFTA) as a representative).
