Massive data security breaches have grabbed headlines in the past few years. The data thieves responsible for these breaches have stolen the credit and debit card data of customers of retailers such as TJ Maxx, DSW Shoe Warehouse, BJ’s Wholesale Club, and the Hannaford grocery store chain. A thief in control of this payment card data, which can include debit and credit card numbers, expiration dates, security codes and personal identification numbers, has the ability to open new credit accounts and make charges on existing consumer accounts. Whether through personal experiences or through the experiences of our friends and family, most, if not all, of us are all too familiar with the credit card industry’s unrelenting attempts to saddle young, naïve college students with debt that they cannot afford to repay. Students thoughtlessly apply for and use credit cards without considering the negative effects credit card debt can have on their academic, personal, and financial wellbeing. Managing Medical Bills On The Brink Of Bankruptcy, Melissa B. Jacoby, Mirya Holman

This paper presents original empirical evidence on financial interactions between medical providers and their patients who go bankrupt. We use a nationally representative sample of people who filed for bankruptcy in 2007 to compare two popular but hotly contested methods of measuring medical burden. By applying both methods to the same filers, we find that nearly four out of five respondents had some financial obligation for medical care not covered by insurance in the two years prior to filing as measured by the survey method.
