Worldview And Culture: Leadership In Sub-Sahara Africa, Betsie Smith
Worldview And Culture: Leadership In Sub-Sahara Africa, Betsie Smith
New England Journal of Public Policy
The traditional worldview and culture of Africa was very different from that of the West today: man was at the center of a religious universe; time was generally felt to be under the control of man, not the reverse; the belief that the dead are able to influence the living enhanced reverence for the elderly; a belief in collectivism was far stronger than a belief in individualism. Colonial- ism, the Cold War, and three decades following independence upset the traditional African worldview and created bewildering frictions within the political, economic, and social wellbeing of the continent. The role of African …

Articulating The Right To Democratic Governance In Africa, Nsongurua J. Udombana
Articulating The Right To Democratic Governance In Africa, Nsongurua J. Udombana
Michigan Journal of International Law
This Article articulates the right to democratic governance in Africa, arguing that democratic entitlement ought to acquire, if indeed it already has not acquired, a degree of legitimacy in the continent. The Article begins with an examination of the patrimonial State structure in Africa and its negative impact on governance. It is a …

A Call To Restructure Existing International Environmental Law In Light Of Africa's Renaissance: The United Nations Convention To Combat Desertification And The New Partnership For Africa's Development (Nepad), Leslie C. Clark
Seattle University Law Review

Land And Liberation: Lessons For The Creation Of Effective Land Reform Policy In South Africa, Hasani Claxton
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
Based upon the premise that land reform is essential to creating socio-economic equality, easing racial tensions and stemming the tide of violence in South Africa, this note will provide suggestions for effective land reform policy. To accomplish this, this Note will examine the paths taken by several other transitional African governments in land reform policy. It will attempt to extract practical lessons from their experiences and apply them towards the development of effective land redistribution policy in South Africa. Part I of this note will provide a historical overview of colonialism and land law in Africa. Part II will examine …
