The United States And China: From Noncommunication To Diplomatic Relations, Mary Jeanne Patrick
The United States And China: From Noncommunication To Diplomatic Relations, Mary Jeanne Patrick
Masters Theses
After more than two decades of fundamental differences due to lack of direct diplomatic relations, the People's Republic of China and the United States are developing a harmonious working relationship. Friendly relations between these two major nations began to improve in 1972 during President Richard Nixon's visit to China that had been arranged by Henry Kissinger, Assistant for National Security Affairs.
The purpose of this thesis is to show that nations can overcome their negative stereotyped images with one another when their leaders will enter into effective communication.
Chapter I considers the historical aspects of the Sino-American relationship.
Chapter II …
Race And Sentencing Equality In Kentucky, Robert L. Hurley
Race And Sentencing Equality In Kentucky, Robert L. Hurley
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Disparity in sentencing felons based on racial considerations has long has been considered a problem for civil libertarians and scholars alike. Examining data gathered in Kentucky, this thesis addresses this issue through the application of recently developed methodological techniques. Utilizing an index of sentencing equality, this study shows that while differences do exist in black and white offender offense characteristics, these differences do not account for the variations in sentences rendered in cases of white as opposed to black felons. This exploratory research reviews and critiques previous research and provides evidence which should prove useful in resolving the problem of …

The Landmarks Of Federal Hill: The Pushcart Struggle 1930-1942 (Conclusion), Joseph R. Muratore
Joseph Muratore papers: Newspaper Columns
I hope you have enjoyed this brief series on the Struggle of the Push Cart vendors.
Many have thought that the vendors merely stopped placing their stands on Balbo Avenue and Spruce Street not realizing the great struggle suffered to remain there, however, after the vendors were allowed to return to their former stands, a few were old men and never returned.
Some became discouraged and looked for work elsewhere, those that remained until 1962 slowly died and no one replaced them.
Those who were familiar with the history of the stands became discouraged in their attempting to establish vending …

The Stabilization Programs Of The International Monetary Fund: The Case Of Bolivia, Melvin Burke
School of Economics Faculty Scholarship
The ubiquitous, much studied but little understood, stabilization programs of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) exist today throughout the so-called Third World. The IMF's stated objective is to facilitate the expansion of international trade as a step toward the promotion and maintenance of high levels of employment and real income and the development of the productive resources of all members. It employs vast financial resources and political power to promote the free flow of international trade and finance.

Statutory And Judicial Responses To The Problem Of Access To Government Information, Constance Y. Singleton, Howard Hunter
Statutory And Judicial Responses To The Problem Of Access To Government Information, Constance Y. Singleton, Howard Hunter
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The tremendous growth of government occasioned by greater involvement in the social and economic life of the nation has been the cause of many concerns. Two perennial concerns have been the extent to which the government can prevent public access to information on the basis of which policies and decisions are made and the possibility for misuse by the government of information private to individuals or business firms. This article focuses on federal statutory responses to these issues. The legislative intent has usually been praiseworthy but the resulting statutes, especially as they have been interpreted by the courts, have often …
