Rev. David T. Link, the Joseph A. Matson Dean Emeritus of Notre Dame Law School, once said, “Your vocation is what you do to make a living. Your purpose in life is what you do to make living worthwhile.”

Father Link had both — in abundance.

A prosecutor, professor, and priest, Father Link died Thursday (Oct. 28). He was 85.

The Stanford Law School professor loves being in the classroom, introducing very smart students to new ideas and concepts and helping them understand the subject matter. He was happy being where he was and doing what he was doing, but the available position was at Notre Dame Law School.

Maura Poston Zagrans is an American Catholic poet, author, and photographer. Her book “Camerado, I Give You My Hand,” published by Image in August 2013, tells the non-fiction story of Father David T. Link, a Notre Dame University dean and lawyer who became a priest at 71 after his wife died and now works as a Catholic chaplain to inmates at Indiana State Prison.

A 71-year-old retired law school dean and widowed grandfather became one of three newly ordained priests June 7 in the Diocese of Gary.

“I’m at the highest point I could ever be,” said Father David T. Link, on the day of his ordination at Holy Angels Cathedral in Gary. “I know the Holy Spirit and my wife, Barbara, are here with me.”

1925–1942: John H.A. Whitman

John H.A. Whitman, appointed by Dean Thomas Konop in 1925, served as the first law librarian at Notre Dame Law School. In 1946 he left the university to teach and establish the library at the newly formed King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He retired from teaching in 1958 but continued as the Director of the Evening Session until his death in 1962.

Lora Lashbrook was appointed by Dean Clarence Manion as the second law librarian at Notre Dame Law School. She also served as a legal research instructor, registrar, and secretary to both the dean and the faculty. Marie K. Lawrence became the third law librarian, coming to the Law School from the University Libraries.

Dean Joseph O‘Meara appointed Mrs. Kathleen C. Farmann as the third woman director of the law library (1966-1984). The 1973 enlargement of the Notre Dame Law library‘s physical space came under her leadership. She drafted the Title II government grant proposal for the projected addition to the law building and handled the onsite inspection. She retired in 1984.

Until last year, Mr. Link was content to promulgate that idea at the Notre Dame Law School, where he had been the dean for 24 years. But then, the Rev. Dennis Dease, president of St. Thomas University in Minneapolis, asked him to design and run its new nondenominational faith-based law school, to open in September 2001.
