Integration And Economic Development, Robert L. Birmingham Jan 1965

Integration And Economic Development, Robert L. Birmingham

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In this paper I shall attempt to evaluate the potential impact of economic association among underdeveloped countries. Attention is centered on gain achievable by participating states as a group: world welfare alteration appears devoid of normative implication to the national decision maker, while questions of internal distribution of union benefit are too complex for summary treatment. Conclusions of amalgamation efficacy rest jointly on abstract analysis and deduction from empirical economic parameters; discussion of trade and development theory is extended beyond that logically necessary for argument coherence to provide a brief introduction to relevant recent thought.

Automation And The Lawyer, F. Reed Dickerson Jan 1965

Automation And The Lawyer, F. Reed Dickerson

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Computers and automation have brought about what some have called the "Second Industrial Revolution." But automation is most frequently considered and discussed as it applies to industry or to scientific research. In this article, Professor Dickerson points out that lawyers, too, are already greatly affected by the age of automation. Computers can probably be most useful to lawyers in the area of research, but as the writer indicates, they can and are being used for such diverse things as estate planning, legislative redistricting and predicting in advance the outcome of judicial decisions.

Income Tax Aspects Of Gifts And Leasebacks Of Business Property In Trust, William W. Oliver Jan 1965

Income Tax Aspects Of Gifts And Leasebacks Of Business Property In Trust, William W. Oliver

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Rental deductions for a grantor who transfers property used in his business into a short term trust and then leases it back have been at issue in three recent cases, with the deduction being denied in two of the three cases. Some of the concepts used by the courts in these cases are of doubtful help in analyzing the problems, and there is a need for further clarification before tax consequences can be predicted with a reasonable degree of assurance. There is a possibility that the income will be taxed to the trust, even though a deduction is denied the …
