The debate over both cloning and stem cell research has been intense and polarizing. It played a significant role in the recently completed presidential campaign, mentioned by both candidates on the stump, at both parties' conventions, and was even taken up directly during one of the presidential debates. The topic has been discussed and debated almost continuously by the members of the legal, scientific, medical, and public policy commentariat. I believe that it is a heartening tribute to our national polity that such a complex moral, ethical, and scientific issue has become a central focus of our political discourse. But, …

Investigating The Continuity Of Sex Offending: Evidence From The Second Philadelphia Birth Cohort, Franklin E. Zimring, Wasley G. Jennings, Alex R. Piquero, Stephanie Hays

This study uses data from the Second Philadelphia Birth Cohort to examine the natural history of sex offenders and their involvement in sexual offending through age 26. Several key findings emerged from our effort. First, only one in 10 of the 221 male and female juvenile sex offenders had a sex-related offense during the first eight years of adulthood. Second, 92 percent of all the cohort males with adult sex records had no prior juvenile sex offense. Third, a boy with no sex contacts but five or more total juvenile police contacts was more than twice as likely to commit …

The purpose of this article was to explore police officerʼs experiences during police vehicle pursuits. Interviews of three US police officers were conducted and the descriptive phenomenological psychological method was used to analyze their naive accounts of their lived-experiences. What is the etymology of the phrase blackletter law? Chasing down its origins uncovers not only a surprising turnabout from blackletter law’s original meaning, but also prompts examination of a previously overlooked subject, the history of the law’s changing appearance on the page. This history ultimately proves a cautionary tale of how appearances have hindered access to the law.
