Law School Enters The Matrix: Teaching Critical Legal Studies, Jerry L. Anderson

Critical legal theory should be more widely taught as a useful way of analyzing the law. Recent critiques of CLS do not diminish its usefulness as a tool for teaching critical thinking. Many professors, however, find it difficult to convey the essential concept of CLS in a way students can grasp. This article suggests that the popular movie "The Matrix" may provide a method of explaining critical theory to students.

This article maintains that because Title VII alone does not have the ability to further the progress women have made in academic hiring, retention, and promotion, looking to remedies in addition to Title VII will be advantageous in helping to improve the status of women in U.S. academia. The article suggests as an additional remedy the implementation of faculty mentoring opportunities for junior female faculty members. The development of Web-based Continuing Legal Education (“CLE”) courses is becoming increasingly important to the legal profession and legal education. Forty states currently have mandatory requirements for continuing legal education, many of which permit online CLE. In a collaborative project at the University of Arkansas, a product was designed and developed to serve as a model for future Web-based CLE. This paper provides an account of the process of developing a course interface, the process used to coordinate class activities with the client, and a description of the finished product. American University Washington College of Law's Human Rights Brief is an important educational tool for all of us and is a tremendous source for those involved in human rights work around the world. The Brief promotes the development of human rights by providing both analysis and information about cutting edge cases involving human rights violations today. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Brief, I will reflect on what I perceive to be the changes necessary for legal education and discuss the role of human rights in that process.
