. . . And Law?, John Henry Schlegel
Contributions to Books
Published as Chapter 18 in Searching for Contemporary Legal Thought, Justin Desautels-Stein & Christopher Tomlins, eds.
The locution “law and . . . (some other discipline)” implicitly asserts the primacy of legal doctrine and institutions narrowly conceived for coming to understand phenomena in which law takes a part. The ordinary story of American legal theory – formalism then realism then contemporary legal thought – can be understood to repeat the triumphalism implicit in “law and . . .” Of course, the story of American legal theory could possibly be read differently -- as a series of responses to the inability …

Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
An 1850 report prepared by William Carey Jones at the request of the Secretaries of State and Interior. In September 2016, Nicole Ludwig led a group of her neighbors in Germany to assist newly-arrived Syrian and Afghani refugees. The volunteers collected clothing and toys, organized activities and field trips for the refugee children, and taught them German. Later, the volunteers offered homework support and led library reading groups. For the adult refugees, the volunteers provided cultural assimilation instruction and cooking classes. While there were occasional challenges to working together, the volunteers and refugees fostered a collaborative system and even hosted a Christmas party, during which one elderly Syrian man said, “This is one of the best memories I …

2017 – The Development Of The Land Tenure And Water Systems In California And Specifically In The Salinas Valley Groundwater Basin [Draft]
Related Research and Documents
Beginning with the Aboriginal era through the Spanish, Mexican and United States eras, maps and governmental documents reflect the state of knowledge concerning California (and the Salinas Valley) along with the driving needs and policies that determined how water was used and managed. By examining the maps, it is possible to determine the state of knowledge in Europe (and later in the United States) as it related to the physical and geographical attributes of California prior to colonization and subsequently throughout the Spanish and Mexican periods. Governmental documents provide a window to how land was used and granted during the …
