The article offers information on the e intersection of the succession law of Louisiana and the article 190 of the Louisiana Mineral Code as applied to the judicial decision of Louisiana Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal in Quantum Resources v. Pirate Lake Oil case. Topics discussed include the concept of forced heirship, the usufructs of surviving spouse including mineral rights, and difference between testate or intestate succession.

The article focuses on the failure of Louisiana' succession law in the context of the stepfamily. Topics discussed include the theories underlying succession law and the role of these theories in intestacy, the societal evolution of the family from nuclear to blended as well as problems in implementation of the theories of succession and merits of approaches to the "Cinderella Problem" taken by France and other jurisdictions.
