The purpose of the present paper is to contribute to the empirical literature on country interlocks by illustrating and analysing the interlocking directorships in the first 40 Italian, French and British Blue Chips as of December 2007 (Italy)/March 2008 (France and uk). The theoretical literature identify two possible explanations for interlocking directorships, on the one hand the collusion among players in the same market or in general among enterprises that have business relations among themselves; on the other hand the interest for enterprises to have on their boards bankers, suppliers, and clients so as to reduce information asymmetries. Our findings …

Competition And Relevant Markets In The Pharmaceutical Industry: The Case Of Pah Drugs, Kevin C. Green
Kevin C Green
The nature and extent of competition between different therapies for a given medical condition often is a critical and controversial issue in both antitrust cases and in general strategic analysis in the pharmaceutical industry. The market for pulmonary arterial hypertension (“PAH”) therapies provides an interesting case study for analyzing these issues. An event study analyzing how the stock prices of PAH therapy providers respond to competitive developments sheds light on the nature of competition among different types of therapies. The results support the view that not all drugs for a given medical condition should necessarily be included in the same …

Striking A Balance Between Competition Law Enforcement And Patent Policy: A Developing Country's Perspective, Thomas K. Cheng
Striking A Balance Between Competition Law Enforcement And Patent Policy: A Developing Country's Perspective, Thomas K. Cheng
Thomas K. Cheng
This book chapter examines the tension between competition law enforcement and patent policy in developing countries. Based on the framework proposed by Louis Kaplow in an article in the early 1980s, this book chapter suggests how developing countries should balance consumer welfare against the need to provide incentives to innovate. The book chapter argues that the balance depends on the developing country at issue, in particular on that country's capacity to innovate. For those developing countries with little capacity to innovate, this book chapter suggests that the balance should be tilted towards competition law enforcement. The degree of patent protection …

A Tale Of Two Competition Law Regimes--The Telecom-Sector Competition Regulation In Hong Kong And Singapore, Thomas K. Cheng
Thomas K. Cheng
Competition law has seen very active development in Asia in recent years. Ironically, Hong Kong and Singapore, as two of the freest and most competitive economies in the region, long held a skeptical attitude towards competition law. Singapore enacted its first cross-sector competition law in 2004, some say only due to American pressure. For years, the Hong Kong government defended its sectoral model and insisted that the city had no need for a cross-sector competition law. However, that obstinate attitude shifted in March 2007, when the government announced that Hong Kong would follow Singapore's footsteps. Until the new law is …

Inclusive online updates jan10. The anthropology of law borders at the anthropologies of religion and of economics. Interdisciplinary work in these three fields is essential. In the anthropology of economics, this raises the issue whether to approach the overlapping areas from the economic or the anthropological side. This chapter argues in favor of the latter, reporting on (I.). an overview of the mainstream results and ensuing remarks and, (II.) because of their special importance for modern political tasks, the anthropology of the market and of competition, including the anthropologies of giving thanks and corruption. As in all chapters, a bibliography …
