This paper considers the compelling need to introduce industrial democracy law in Nigeria. It starts by defining the concept of industrial democracy and examines the practice and reception of the concept in other jurisdictions, particularly considering the German co-determination system (Mitbestimmung) as a model par excellence. The paper further examines the available incoherent provisions in some statutes in Nigeria which seem to provide some level of worker participation in the absence of any direct legislation and goes to propose a way forward, following the German co-determination model which has been heralded as very successful in promoting effective industrial democracy. Curbing State Interference In Workers' Freedom Of Association In Nigeria", O. V. C. Okene

From the time that trade unions first emerged in Nigeria, they have suffered crude treatment and abuse from the government. The abuses were particularly grave during several years of military rule. Although Nigeria has returned to democratic governance, the abridgment of trade union rights continues. This article argues that through such behavior, the government of Nigeria infringes workers' freedom of association under international law – which does not augur well for the nation's future as a liberal democracy.
