This Essay focuses on four areas of international human rights law. The first area, the protection of attorneys' fees from forfeiture, is an issue of great concern in the United States, given the state of the law there. The next area, the application of the death penalty in international law, will also include arguments about the "death row phenomenon." The third area addressed is the use of international human rights law to overcome the rule of non-inquiry in extradition matters, a rule by which the judicial authority reviewing the propriety of extradition is barred from inquiry into the fairness of …

This short article gives an overview of recent developments in recognition of the right to effective defense in international criminal proceedings, with particular attention to new structures. The systems for provision of defense lawyers are examined in a case study of the Charles Taylor trial by the Special Court for Sierra Leone, sitting in The Hague, as well as the Bosnian War Crimes Chamber and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

Practical Training In Law In The Netherlands: Big Law Model Or Clinical Model, And The Call Of Public Interest Law, Richard J. Wilson

This article identifies two models now at work in the Netherlands, models that present potentially competing visions of practical training for law graduates seeking entry into the legal profession. The first is the Law Firm School, a new innovation in 2009, designed and funded by 14 major Amsterdam law firms, firms that make up part of what is often called Big Law. The Law Firm School model is embedded within the traditional apprenticeship training for all lawyers, but is available only to associates of the participating firms.
