Dean's Desk: Staff Excellence Is Institutional Excellence, Austen L. Parrish

Austen Parrish (2014-2022)

When it comes to the student experience, the people that our students interact with most frequently are our staff, and demands on staff have been particularly high as we’ve navigated the pandemic. In short, being one of the nation’s top public law schools requires staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes, who care deeply about student success and who provide high-quality help. In Bloomington, we’re fortunate that we have the best, with long-serving staff who are truly exceptional.

In this Dean’s Desk, I thought I’d pause to recognize a few staff members at the law school and highlight why they …

In this guest column, Indiana Lawyer invited us to discuss some of the initiatives occurring at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law that help recruit talented and diverse students. Terrance Stroud, ‘03, a dedicated alumnus who has played a key role in helping establish several diversity pipeline programs for the law school, joins me in this column.

Dean's Desk: Amid Covid-19 Shutdown, Iu Maurer Displays Resilience, Austen L. Parrish

Austen Parrish (2014-2022)

The spring semester is coming to a close in Bloomington, but in ways none of us expected. The COVID-19 pandemic required us to shift to teaching remotely in a matter of days, and all on-campus events — including commencement — have been canceled or postponed. Fortunately, when classes resumed remotely March 30, our students, faculty and staff more than rose to the occasion and pulled together, and the transition has been smoother than expected.

Our community’s resilience and positive attitude through the pandemic have led me to reflect more broadly on the wonderful support — financial and otherwise — we …

Dean's Desk: Students Find Clerkships In Smaller Counties Rewarding, Austen L. Parrish

Austen Parrish (2014-2022)

The students at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law come to Bloomington from all over the nation. During their summers, the temptation is for them to work in the country’s largest cities, often with the majority working in Indianapolis, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and New York. Many others work in our innovative Stewart Fellows global internship program, where students are placed in countries throughout the world.

Fewer students, however, choose to work in Indiana’s smaller towns, and the hundreds of trial court judges working there often need help. Many trial courts have crowded dockets and limited staffing, particularly those in …

Commencement Calls For Review Of Annual Milestones, Austen L. Parrish

Austen Parrish (2014-2022)

This weekend is a time of celebration in Bloomington, as we welcome friends and family of the Class of 2019 for our annual commencement ceremony. It’s an important milestone in our students’ lives. Commencement is also a time for looking back. The past year saw several significant milestones for the IU Maurer School of Law. I’d like to touch on just a few of them in this month’s column.

Dean's Desk: Iu Maurer Programs Supporting Careers In Cybersecurity, Austen L. Parrish

Austen Parrish (2014-2022)

A recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report estimated a near 30 percent growth in coming years for information security professionals, far outpacing most other job types. While Indiana University has long recognized the importance of data security and privacy, multiple new initiatives are ensuring that the next generation of chief information security officers, systems analysts, privacy professionals and others will come from our law school.

One of the ways the law school is leading the way is through the university’s new master of science in cybersecurity risk management. That degree program combines the resources of three of IU’s top-ranked schools …

Dean's Desk: Graduating Class Of 2018 Provides Opportunity To Reflect, Austen L. Parrish

Austen Parrish (2014-2022)

On May 5, our faculty, staff, friends and family will gather in Indiana University’s beautiful auditorium to celebrate the IU Maurer School of Law Class of 2018. Presiding at our commencement ceremony is a privilege, and our graduates will go on to do great things. I look forward to having them return to the school to hear of their continued success.

As we celebrate the achievements of this year’s graduating class and look forward to the future, we also look back and celebrate the many accomplishments of those graduates who came before them. We recognize alumni achievements informally all year …

According To The Dean: Public Service And Public Service Loan Forgiveness: A Commitment To Our State And Our Nation, Austen Parrish Mar 2018

According To The Dean: Public Service And Public Service Loan Forgiveness: A Commitment To Our State And Our Nation, Austen Parrish

Austen Parrish (2014-2022)

A student loan bill proposed by Congress is troublesome for those who worry about encouraging our best and brightest to commit to state and national service. Among other provisions, the bill – known as the PROSPER Act – would eliminate the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program. The repeal apparently will do little for the federal budget, but the predictions are it will adversely affect government, the military and public-interest organizations that have relied on the program for attracting and retaining talent.

Hidden among the partisan rhetoric are issues of real importance to the state – and compelling stories about …

Dean's Desk: Past And Present, Women Play Key Roles At Iu Maurer, Austen L. Parrish

Austen Parrish (2014-2022)

Under first lady Laurie Burns McRobbie’s leadership, Indiana University founded Women’s Philanthropy as one way to celebrate alumnae leadership and to make the achievements of our most talented and trailblazing women graduates more visible. As the IU Maurer School of Law’s 175th year draws to a close, consistent with these larger University efforts, it’s an opportune time to celebrate some of the law school’s extraordinary women graduates. Their stories are powerful and inspiring, and I’m pleased to share just a few.

Dean's Desk: Partnerships Prep Students For Indiana Legal Careers, Austen L. Parrish

Austen Parrish (2014-2022)

As one of the top public law schools in the nation, we attract students from all over the United States – and the world – who understand the advantages of an IU education. As the state’s flagship law school, however, we also have an enduring commitment to educating Indiana’s best and brightest and encouraging them to stay in the state and contribute to its growth. Taken together, these three programs will go a long way toward advancing a strong commitment that goes back to our founding in 1842 as one of the oldest law schools in the nation and the …
