Microplastics In Full View: Birds As Bioindicators Of Malta's Coastal Ecosystem Health, Dalton Brauer
Microplastics In Full View: Birds As Bioindicators Of Malta's Coastal Ecosystem Health, Dalton Brauer
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Plastic pollution has recently become a widely studied topic, yet research on microplastics has remained lacking for specific geographic regions. Microplastics are small plastics resulting from degradation or the dumping of raw material and can lead to deleterious impacts on the coastal marine environment and its organisms. To assess Malta’s coastal environmental health, water birds (inshore, offshore and pelagic species) were used as bioindicators by assessing the presence and abundance of plastic within their stomach contents. The project hoped to fill some of the current gaps in knowledge on microplastics within Malta by creating a working baseline, as well as …
The Presbyterian Enlightenment: The Confluence Of Evangelical And Enlightenment Thought In British America, Brandon S. Durbin
The Presbyterian Enlightenment: The Confluence Of Evangelical And Enlightenment Thought In British America, Brandon S. Durbin
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Eighteenth-Century British American Presbyterian ministers incorporated covenantal theology, ideas from the Scottish Enlightenment, and resistance theory in their sermons. The sermons of Presbyterian ministers strongly indicate the intermixing of enlightenment and evangelical ideas. Congregants heard and read these sermons, spreading these ideas to the average colonist. This combination helps explain why American Presbyterians were so apt to resist British rule during the American Revolution. Protestant covenantal theology, derived from Protestant reformers like John Calvin and John Knox, emphasized virtue and duty. This covenant affected both the people and their rulers. When rulers failed to uphold their covenant with God, the …
911 Calls In Homicide Cases: What Does The Verbal Behavior Of The Caller Reveal?, Jon D. Cromer
911 Calls In Homicide Cases: What Does The Verbal Behavior Of The Caller Reveal?, Jon D. Cromer
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Each year, numerous 911 calls reporting a death or a serious injury that leads to death are received by emergency communications centers; many of these turn out to be related to a homicide. Interestingly, a small percentage of these calls are made by the perpetrator. These calls constitute the first available evidence in most homicide cases. They are recorded at times of great stress and are the first versions of what the callers purport to know. The ability to develop hypotheses about a caller’s truthfulness enhances the police response by objectively informing the process of formulating early investigative strategies. For …
Policy Context Of The Endemic Flora Of The Maltese Islands In A Changing Taxonomic Landscape, Clara Agius
Policy Context Of The Endemic Flora Of The Maltese Islands In A Changing Taxonomic Landscape, Clara Agius
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
The degradation of the environment since the Industrial Revolution has been a turning point for legislation, leading to many countries, including EU states, to create legislations that conserve the environment. These legislations are based on scientific facts. This can create a divide between policy and science, as science and scientific methods are constantly changing, while policy has to keep up. Scientific facts of yesterday, may not necessarily be the same as today. This divide between science and policy may have implications on the designation of Protected Areas. One of the criteria of a Protected Area is the protection of an …
The Portable Sensor Network: Conceptualization And Development Of A Modular, Upgradable, And Reusable Sensor System For The Provision Of Offensive And Defensive Surveillance, Brandon Curtis Sanders
The Portable Sensor Network: Conceptualization And Development Of A Modular, Upgradable, And Reusable Sensor System For The Provision Of Offensive And Defensive Surveillance, Brandon Curtis Sanders
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
In the 21st century, law-enforcement, military, border patrol, and private companies all use a wide variety of surveillance equipment that is tailored to their specific needs. This equipment is expensive, typically requires an enormous capital investment, and often fails to live up to expectations; there must be a better way. The primary objective of this thesis is to conceptualize a new and more capable surveillance system, dubbed the Portable Sensor Network (PSN), which can either augment or entirely replace existing systems. The core concept of the PSN demands that it must affordable, portable, modular, and based on existing, commercially available …
The Importance Of Fraud Detection Techniques From The Enron Case And The T.J. Maxx Data Breach, Luyao Peng
The Importance Of Fraud Detection Techniques From The Enron Case And The T.J. Maxx Data Breach, Luyao Peng
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
This thesis examines the issue of fraud detection and its causes and solutions. After a description of two fraudulent cases Enron scandal (internal fraud), and T.J. Maxx Data Breach (external fraud), it discusses the causes of these two fraud cases using Cressey’s “fraud triangle” theory and Albrecht’s three-stage theory. It then describes various fraud detection techniques in internal and external fraud. Finally, the recommendations for the improvements of both internal and external fraud detection systems are explained.
