Internships And The Making Of Future Lawyers, Seow Hon Tan

As law firm internships provide law students with their first substantial encounters with lawyers, in situations where they are especially eager to impress, a project was undertaken to examine the impact of private law firm internships on the professional identities of future lawyers. Fifty-two volunteers from the Singapore Management University, which mandates 10 weeks of internships with approved partners, were surveyed. Most had done corporate or civil litigation work at local firms in Singapore. The findings of this research project were presented at the fifth International Legal Ethics Conference, held in Canada in July.

This article reexamines an earlier experiment in the use of blogs in teaching negotiation when undertaken in a different cultural environment. I briefly examine two core factors — technical competence and cultural preferences in communication — as well as a student preference to reserve the use of social media for purely social and informal communications. Parallels are also drawn with the technical and cultural contexts of developments in online dispute resolution.

This article discusses some of the more advanced techniques and “tricks” in mooting and is meant primarily for students who are aiming to compete in moot court competitions for the first time. It builds upon the basic fundamentals that would have been taught in a Legal Writing course, and covers the four key components of a moot: the opening, the arguments, the answering of questions, and the conclusion/ rebuttals.
