City Of Las Vegas Detention And Enforcement Accreditation Evaluation Program, Daniel Bennett
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The City of Las Vegas, Detention and Enforcement is a law enforcement organization that is significantly unique in its mission and organization. On March 15, 1982, the City of Las Vegas determined that, due to extreme overcrowding at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Departments holding facility, it was time to create the Las Vegas Department of Detention and Correctional Services. As the population of Las Vegas continued to grow, the Las Vegas Department of Detention and Correctional Services also increased in both size and degree of responsibilities. In 1986, the Las Vegas Park Rangers were absorbed and became the law …
Perceived Justice And Barriers And Facilitators To The Attainment Of Leadership Positions In Local And County Law Enforcement Organizations In The State Of Florida, Delsa R. Bush
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Disparity in leadership positions within organizations continue to exist along racial and gender lines even as organizations become more diverse. The numerous studies investigating race, ethnicity, gender, and the attainment of leadership positions within organizations focus primarily on the glass-ceiling effect. Few have empirically addressed the issue of the glass-ceiling effect in law enforcement organizations. Previous research suggested that several factors might affect leadership positions, i.e., human capital assets, demographic characteristics, organizational characteristics, procedural justice, distributive justices, barriers and facilitators to career advancement, institutional values, racism, and organizational culture. The glass ceiling effect, which encompasses a majority of these factors, …
Factors Influencing Police Officer Marksmanship During Qualifying Drills, Kelly Kennedy
Factors Influencing Police Officer Marksmanship During Qualifying Drills, Kelly Kennedy
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Police departments across the country are interested in reducing the costs of retraining and improving the rate of retention of the officers they are training. If police officers can be better trained in the skills necessary for marksmanship due to improved evaluative methods by instructors then the rate of progression in skill development could be accelerated. The purpose of this non-experimental, exploratory (comparative) and explanatory (correlational) survey research was to examine the relationships among demographics, handgrip, firearms experience, physiological changes, environmental factors, and psychological state for police officers during qualifying shooting drills, and to determine if Marksmanship during qualifying shooting …

A Validation Study Of Risk Management Systems, Bridget Kelly
A Validation Study Of Risk Management Systems, Bridget Kelly
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this study was to examine the predictive validity of Risk Management Systems (RMS) as a risk assessment instrument. To date, a published validation study does not exist for the RMS. The study employs secondary data analysis to examine the predictive validity of RMS recidivism and violence scores on three outcomes: arrest, unsuccessful termination from supervision, and technical violations. The study sample consisted of 830 probationers from the United States Probation Office, District of Nevada. The analyses showed that RMS recidivism and violence scores were moderately predictive of all three outcomes.

Disciplinary Patterns And Complaint System Of The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Scott Eric Hutter
Theses Digitization Project
This thesis will analyze the disciplinary patterns and the complaint system of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD). It reveals if there is significance when multiple officers engage in improper acts as opposed to when a single officer engages in the same acts. The study will identify the most common types of accusations filed against sworn personnel, what ranks are most commonly involved (i.e. deputy, sergeant, etc.), and what assignments (i.e. patrol) incur the most investigations.
Optimization Of The Microprecipitation Procedure For Nuclear Forensics Applications, Lyndsey Renee Kelly
Optimization Of The Microprecipitation Procedure For Nuclear Forensics Applications, Lyndsey Renee Kelly
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Microprecipitation has become one of the most widely used sample preparation techniques for alpha spectroscopy. Many factors during the precipitation process can affect the yield and energy resolution by adding unwanted mass to the sample. Current applications in nuclear forensics call for an optimization of energy resolution and yield in order to improve identification and quantify specific radionuclides. The purpose of this research is to determine the optimal parameters used for microprecipitation. The optimal solution temperature, precipitation time, carrier amount, and hydrofluoric acid amount are used to investigate the influence of varying the type of carrier, as well as, the …

Predisposition Or Socialization? A Study Of Law Enforcement Values, Everett O. Doolittle Dr.
School of Business Student Theses and Dissertations
This research was intended to contribute to this debate and its policy implications by examining whether students entering a law enforcement degree program hold predetermined beliefs and values that are significantly different from their classmates not entering law enforcement careers and that vary among themselves according to age, race, or gender. Over 5 years, a 30-question survey of 28 classes regarding current criminal justice issues and debates was conducted among 833 students taking an introductory-level criminal justice course at a mid-western university.
The data strongly supported the research hypothesis that beginning law enforcement students held different beliefs and values than …
