On November 15, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act into law, ending a protracted bipartisan battle, ultimately resulting in a compromise between parties. The $1.2 trillion bill serves as the first major project of President Joe Biden’s “Build Back Better” plan. Although it has not received much attention from most citizens, it will have far-reaching effects for many years to come.

The hardships of a world-wide pandemic is not without precedent. The infamous Spanish Flu, which was first discovered in 1918, lasted around 2 years and was proportionally more deadly than the current statistics from the COVID-19 pandemic. At its peak, the Spanish Flu infected around 40 percent of the global population and killed an estimated 50 million people. Like the alcohol industry was during Prohibition, the marijuana industry is a profitable one. And, as bootlegging was then, selling marijuana in the United States is currently illegal. Despite the number of states that have legalized or decriminalized the sale of marijuana for medical or recreational use under state law, marijuana sales remain illegal as a matter of federal law under the federal Controlled Substances Act of 1970 (“CSA”).
