University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Francis Allen was the Dean who hired me. First deans are, in their own way, as memorable as first kisses; they set expectations for all that follows. The expectations that Frank Allen set were high indeed. In this young professor's mind (I was 24 when I received my offer; 25 when I joined the faculty) he embodied what I still regard as the two most important academic virtues: scholarship and decency. These virtues combined to make him, at the time he accepted the Michigan deanship, perhaps the nation's most powerful voice for criminal justice reform and the country's leading scholar …

Women At Work: Towards An Inclusive Narrative Of The Rise Of The Regulatory State, Arianne Renan Barzilay Dr.
Arianne Renan Barzilay Dr. (J.S.D., New York University School of Law)
Abstract: This Article seeks to enrich what we know about the establishment of the regulatory state. It focuses on women’s contribution to the rise of the American regulatory apparatus. By looking at historical sources and archival materials, this Article illustrates how women reformers were central to the development of the regulatory state and how they were guided by an ideology that called for government regulation to provide decent standards of living. Through the example of the establishment of the Women’s Bureau in the U.S. Department of Labor, the Article expands our understanding of the purposes of administrative bodies, and it …

In Six Degrees of Cass Sunstein: Collaboration Networks in Legal Scholarship, we began the study of the legal academy's collaboration network. When mathematicians discuss the nature of collaboration in their field they focus on the most influential collaborator in the discipline-- Paul Erdos, the peripatetic Hungarian mathematician who authored over 1500 papers with over 450 different collaborators before his death in 1996. They introduced the concept of the Erdos Number, which is the number of degrees of separation between a mathematician and Erdos.
