Nearly a year to the day since it was published, a book from incoming Indiana University Maurer School of Law faculty member has earned an Independent Publisher Book Award (“IPPY.”)

Professor Valena Beety’s Manifesting Justice: Wrongly Convicted Women Reclaim Their Rights won the Gold Medal in Women’s Issues. Since 1997, the Independent Publisher Book Awards have been recognizing the best independently published books each year.

Released on May 30, 2022, Beety’s book has already won two other prestigious awards—the Montaigne Medal and the Sarton Nonfiction Award—this spring.

Morgan York was in her third and final year at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law when she published an article in the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies. Two years later, she’s being recognized as one of the country’s top law school writers.

When a Norfolk Southern train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, spilling hundreds of thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals into the soil, water, and air, Zoe Kolender knew the cleanup efforts would be an arduous task. But she also knew something most people don’t—that environmental disasters like the Norfolk Southern derailment are treated differently depending on the areas in which they occur.

A Maurer School of Law faculty member has been recognized for his contributions to reviewing interdisciplinary research for the Journal of Institutional Economics. Professor Dan Cole, Robert H. McKinney Professor of Law and a senior fellow with the Ostrom Workshop, was named one of three “Reviewers of the Year” by the journal on Wednesday (Sept. 7). The announcement was made during the annual World Interdisciplinary Network for Institutional Research (WINIR) Conference. The award, which comes with a £400 prize, recognizes outstanding reviewers for the journal.

Our country has a long history of striving for openness and transparency in government processes. In 1978, the United States Supreme Court held, “It is clear that the courts of this country recognize a general right to insect and copy public records and documents, including judicial records and documents.” Long before America’s high court recognized this common law principle, court records were historically accessible for inspection by lawyers, journalists, land title companies, credit agencies, academics, and members of the general public. The most important development in legal scholarship over the past quarter century has been the rise of empirical research. Drawing upon the traditions of legal realism and the law and economics movement, a variety of social science techniques have delivered fresh perspectives and punctured false claims. But environmental law has been slow to adopt empirical tools, and our findings indicate that it lags behind other fields. There are several clear benefits from an empirical agenda to explore how to make environmental law more effective. This article is a primer on the work needed to ensure accessibility in online instruction. It discusses different disabilities, reviews relevant laws and standards, and explores the relationship between accessibility and the principles of universal design. Citators are one of the oldest and most important tools in the legal researcher’s arsenal. They serve both as precautionary measures against bad law, and as a means of doing primary legal research. The evolution of citators plays an important role in the development of both the legal publishing industry and legal research itself. This article examines many aspects of the legal citator—its history, development, uses, and possible future.
