There is an old tradition, still believed by many lawyers, that these year-books were official reports made by a reporter appointed and paid by the king. If there ever was such a reporter, he is yet to be discovered. Our own day is peculiar in the endeavors we have seen to evolve what is claimed to be a science of jurisprudence.
