Law Clinics And Lobbying Restrictions, Kevin Barry, Marcy Karin
Law Clinics And Lobbying Restrictions, Kevin Barry, Marcy Karin
University of Colorado Law Review
"Can law school clinics lobby?" This question has plagued professors for decades but has gone unanswered, until now. This Article situates law school clinics within the labyrinthine law of lobbying restrictions and concludes that clinics may indeed lobby. For ethical, pedagogical, and, ultimately, practical reasons, it is critical that professors who teach in clinics understand these restrictions. This Article offers advice to professors and students on safely navigating this complicated terrain.

The Clinical Divide: Overcoming Barriers To Collaboration Between Clinics And Legal Writing Programs, Sarah O. Schrup
ExpressO
Increased communication between legal research and writing (“LRW”) programs and clinical programs is desirable because it provides students with a seamless learning experience, enhances faculty teaching in both departments, and creates opportunities for collaboration that benefits a law-school community generally. But barriers presently exist that hinder collaboration. Specifically, barriers that impact collaboration and integrated learning between LRW and clinical programs stem from: (1) differences in the development of the two disciplines and the resultant differences in teaching methodologies; and (2) other practical barriers including physical separation, status issues, lack of communication, competing demands within the law school and the reality …

Teach Your Students Well: Valuing Clients In The Law School Clinic., Ann Juergens
Teach Your Students Well: Valuing Clients In The Law School Clinic., Ann Juergens
Faculty Scholarship
Law schools, teaching primarily by the casebook method, generally avoid the thorny issues that real clients pose.' Recently, however, law review articles and the ""regular classroom"" have referred more frequently to real client stories. Law school clinics are a primary source of client stories. Despite increased attention to clinical programs, client interests are frequently subordinated to the goals of students, clinical law teachers and law schools. This article urges clinicians to constantly evaluate whether and how well they and their students take their clients' interests and perspectives on clinical education into account. It argues that clinic teachers must learn to …

Legal Aid Clinics In Less Thickly Populated Communities, John S. Bradway
Legal Aid Clinics In Less Thickly Populated Communities, John S. Bradway
Michigan Law Review
Legal aid work, whether performed by independent societies, or by clinics connected with law schools, has ceased to be a novelty in large cities, especially in the northeastern and extreme western parts of the United States. When one comes to examine the progress of this charitable aspect of law practice in less thickly settled communities, a definite orientation is necessary. There is little literature dealing either with the need in rural sections and the smaller cities for definite organizations or the question as to whether there is enough clinical material to make possible a law school course in this field. …
