In this Article we describe preliminary research by and about women law students at the University of Pennsylvania Law School—a typical, if elite, law school stratified deeply along gender lines. Our database draws from students enrolled at the Law School between 1987 and 1992, and includes academic performance data from 981 students, self-reported survey data from 366 students, written narratives from 104 students, and group-level interview data of approximately eighty female and male students.' From these data we conclude that the law school experience of women in the aggregate differs markedly from that of their male peers.

But this convocation is also, as Holmes put it, a time when the Law School "becomes conscious of itself and its meaning." I want to combine these two purposes by discussing with you our common enterprise of education for a learned profession. Specifically, I want to consider a distinctive feature …

This is the determination of an Arbitration Committee established to hear and determine whether or not the grounds for the President's recommendation for the dismissal of Lucinda Vandervort, a tenured Associate Professor, are established and, if established, whether or not they constitute good and sufficient cause for dismissal. The Committee has already issued an interim decision that, even if established, the grounds for the President's recommendation for dismissal do not constitute good and sufficient cause for dismissal and Professor Vandervort has been fully reinstated pending this determination. We advised the parties of our conclusion to that effect after the University …
