The basic premise of this book, by two law professors, is that humans, in spite of their differences, share one essential characteristic: "the capacity of every rational person to advance in moral self-perfection." How this is achieved, the authors argue, is more dependent on the intention to do good for one's fellow human beings than on the actual results of any efforts to do so. By this analysis, a person can become good without necessarily doing good; it is the good intention that is ultimately determinative. Authenticity Within Hip-Hop And Other Cultures Threatened With Assimilation, Kembrew Mcleod

This essay examines claims of authenticity within hip-hop, African American culture. In the mid- to late 1990s, authenticity claims have been pervasive within hip-hop music communities, which had previously existed on the margins of mainstream U.S. culture. By mapping the range of meanings associated with authenticity as they are invoked discursively, we can gain a better understanding of how a culture in danger of assimilation seeks to preserve its identity. The use of the conceptual apparatus of semantic dimensions highlights how that culture's most central and powerful symbols are organized and given meaning vis-á-vis authenticity within a discursive system.

This article reviews several familiar plans to alter the structure of taxation, including the flat tax, a VAT, and the USA Tax. With the significant exception of a simplified income tax system, every plan to replace the current U.S. federal tax system would move us in precisely the wrong direction. These plans would abandon income taxation entirely in an attempt to solve problems that do not exist, and they are based on a flawed ideal of a neutral tax code. The people of the United States have a constitutional right to know; the government has a duty not to block access to information. The First Amendment and the Intellectual Property Clause cabin the Commerce Clause. Congress cannot create a quasi-property right to exclude others from information without clearly demonstrating market failure. Sui generis protection of data bases does not meet this threashold requirement.
