This essay explores the American and international components of the AJIL's identity, with attention to intellectual agendas as well as to individuals who have influenced the Journal in its first century. Part I asks about "American" and "international" preoccupations in the AJIL's substantive work, foreshadowing some of the themes to be developed in more depth in other essays in this centennial series. What have we understood to fall within the purview of an American journal of international law?
