Thus, it has been suggested that mandatory maternity leave regulations, which are in force in many American school systems today, are a ". . . manifestation of [this] cultural sex role conditioning . ... " It is only recently that the power of the school boards to make these rules requiring teachers to take leaves of absence after a certain month of pregnancy have been challenged in our courts.
