In response to Race to the Top mandates, student academic growth models are being incorporated into teacher evaluation processes across the country. Illinois’ version of the reform is the Performance Evaluation Reform Act. This paper briefly summarizes the new law and its impact to date. Further, the paper provides reflection upon the current research related to VAMs, and the possible legal consequences of relying on student growth models as a significant component of teacher personnel decisions.

Via Verdi 15 – Cosa Vuol Dire “Libertà Di Informazione”?, Sajjad Khaksari

A Case Study On Burying Alive Of Two Women In Balochistan, Sohail Ahmed Ansari Advocate

Violence against women is present in a variety of forms in Pakistan. From domestic abuse & sexual harassment to child marriages and honour killing; a range of anti-women atrocities are carried out. Pakistani women face systematic discrimination from the day they are born. The patriarchal mindset of society refuses to recognize them as human beings deserving of equality, human rights and justice. Unfortunately in some parts of Balochistan a brutal custom of justice prevails; where the women are treated as trading objects. They are being tried without hearing their cause. They are not allowed to plea their case. They are …

Guide To Incorporation Of Not For Profit Organisations In Nigeria, Taiwo Adebola Odumosu Mr.

The incorporation of non-profit bodies in Nigeria is governed by the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2004 (‘the Act’). The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) is vested with responsibility for non-profit organisations. The CAC has branches in most State capitals of the Federation and its headquarters is based in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. Before applying to the CAC for incorporation of a non-profit body, one must check that the name of the new entity is not already in use. This can be done by purchasing an Availability Form, which costs very little. In Nigeria only legal practitioners, and to some …

The Basics Of Us Criminal Justice System, Bethel G.A Erastus-Obilo
Bethel G.A Erastus-Obilo
The criminal justice system is complex. It is also bureaucratic by design and has evolved over the years from simple unstructured peacekeeping units to the large complex crime-fighting system that it is today. Many of those who work within it find it challenging and unwieldy. Many of those who are accused of an offense find it confusing and intimidating. This goes for citizens and foreigners whether they are competent in the English language or not. For most members of ethnic minority groups, the experience can be harrowing and often fatal.

An Increased Role For The Department Of Education In Addressing Federalism Concerns, Benton C. Martin

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), one of the most important pieces of education legislation in our nation’s history, is overdue for reauthorization. Prior attempts at reauthorization have failed because of political controversy surrounding the Act, including controversy surrounding the extent of the federal role in education. NCLB does not fit squarely into traditional models of federalism and new theories of federalism have emerged to address the unique new dynamics raised by its expansive use of the federal spending power. This Article argues these theories point to practical changes that Congress can make to improve NCLB.

Conceptualizing The Right Of Children To Adaptable Education, Shulamit Almog, Lotem Perry-Hazan
Conceptualizing The Right Of Children To Adaptable Education, Shulamit Almog, Lotem Perry-Hazan
Dr. Lotem Perry-Hazan
The contention put forward here is that conceptualization of the right to adaptable education, derived from international human rights law, may be a key factor in interpreting and reviving the notion of multiculturalism in education. We will begin by analyzing three interrelated dimensions of the right to adaptable education: adaptability to the children's circles of cultural affiliations, adaptability to the children’s preferences, and adaptability to the changes of time. We will continue by describing the need to balance between the right to adaptable education and other features of the right to education - available education, accessible education and acceptable education …

The Right To Education: Its Changing Faces In A Constitutional Revolution Era, Lotem Perry Dr.
Dr. Lotem Perry-Hazan
Almost two decades after the constitutional revolution, the Supreme Court of Justice ruled in the Tebeka case that the right to education is a constitutional right, which is interrelated with the right to dignity. My article analyzes the norms that shaped the right to education in Israel during the last two decades in order to explore whether and how the Tebeka case reflected the processes that characterized the education policy. The discussion is divided according to four features of the right to education, whose definition is based on a normative framework outlined by the UN Committee on Economic, Social and …

Disabled Students' Rights Of Access To Charter Schools Under The Idea, Section 504 And The Ada, Robert A. Garda Jr.
Robert A. Garda
Charter schools are under increasing attack for denying admission to disabled students. But traditional schools also turn away disabled students, often preventing them from attending schools in their neighborhood or within their district. This Article discusses when a school is permitted under federal disability law to deny admission to a disabled student. After nearly four decades of special education jurisprudence and regulatory guidance, the circumstances under which a student with a disability may be denied admission to a particular school are still remarkably unclear. This Article first discusses the "zero-reject" principle underlying the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and concludes …

Law School Grades - Flunked Out, But Did Not Really Fail

If the plaintiffs in a most interesting, recent lawsuit ultimately get their way, I will need to change the title of this article. After the Spring 2011 semester, plaintiffs Jonathan Chan and Karla Ford were dismissed from their former law school, Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law (Texas Southern) for academic deficiency, failing to maintain an overall grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0. On February 2, 2012, in response to their dismissal, Chan and Ford filed a lawsuit against Texas Southern, along with their Contracts professor, Shelley Smith. In this article, I will look at some …

This chapter will assess the Antarctic Treaty System, ask what polar lessons can be learned regarding common pool resources, and analyze law of the sea and related measures. It will consider such substantive areas as Arctic and Antarctic natural resource management and procedural opportunities as inclusive governance structures. Enhancing good governance can occur through trust building forums that bring together stakeholders, share information, and make environmentally sound decisions regarding sustainable development.

Canines On Campus: Companion Animals At Postsecondary Educational Institutions, Rebecca J. Huss
Rebecca J. Huss
This Article focuses on the issues that arise when students wish to attend a postsecondary institution accompanied by an animal. The Article begins by analyzing the federal law applicable to students bringing service and assistance animals to campus. The use of animal-assisted activities on campus is also explored. The Article continues with an examination of policies allowing students to have companion animals in campus housing. Concerns raised by administrators about allowing animals on campus are then considered. Finally, the Article sets forth the measures an educational institution should implement to ensure compliance with the law and proposes actions that can …
