Ever since the removal of Affirmative Action in California from Proposition 209, the UC system has struggled with increasing the enrollment numbers of underrepresented minorities on their campuses. In response to this, many of the UC schools are adopting different policies to help counteract the negative effects of Proposition 209. This paper examines the effects of Proposition 209 on the underrepresented minority population in the UC system, specifically focusing on the University of California, Irvine (UCI). This essay picks up a few threads in the ongoing debate on national identity in Italy. Immigration and the intertwining of cultures locally have stretched the contours of the nation state to a breaking point. As a result, the social self has become a sharply contested terrain between those who want to install a symbolic electronic fence around an imagined fatherland and those who want a more inclusive nation at home in a global world. Ricci’S Dicta: Signaling A New Standard For Affirmative Action Under Title Vii?, Roberto L. Corrada

This Article argues that Ricci v. DeStefano, while having dealt a blow to disparate impact theory, has not necessarily dealt a fatal blow to affirmative action in the process. Many believe that Ricci has no implications for affirmative action at all since the case’s facts involved no preferences for minorities. However, I believe that dicta in the case suggests how the Court may handle a Title VII affirmative action case in the future, even though I agree that no affirmative action issue was before the Court in Ricci.
