Criminalizing Ecocide, Rebecca Hamilton

Amid widespread acknowledgment that we live on a planet in peril, the term “ecocide” packs a powerful rhetorical punch. Extant regulatory approaches to environmental protection feel insufficient in the face of the triple threat of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. International criminal prosecution for ecocide, by contrast, promises to meet the moment, and a recent proposal to introduce ecocide into the canon of core international crimes is gaining traction. Assuming the push to criminalize ecocide continues to gain momentum, this Article argues that the primary (and perhaps, sole) benefit that international criminal law can offer in this context is …

Social Media Platforms In International Criminal Investigations, Rebecca Hamilton

In the summer of 2017, hundreds of thousands of videos of the Syrian conflict suddenly disappeared from YouTube. The videos had been published on channels like the Aleppo Media Center, the Shaam News Agency, and the Violations Documentation Center in Syria, which are run by Syrian civil society groups that have been documenting war crimes and other human rights violations since the conflict began in 2011. In a war zone that has been extraordinarily difficult for outside investigators to access, the videos provided crucial evidence that many hoped would eventually lead to international criminal prosecutions.One can readily imagine that any …

This essay reviews a book about General Manuel Noriega, the Panamanian strongman toppled by the Bush Sr. administration in 1989; Noriega was tried on drug charges in Miami and has spent many years in prison. This book examines Noriega's background and rise to power, involvement in drugs and politics in Central America, including the famous murder of Hugo Spadafora, and his trial in the United States. The book's author covered the trial for newspapers; the review's author monitored human rights in Panama in the two years prior to the US invasion and covered the invasion for human rights organizations.
