The Farm Bill now allows for the legal production and research of industrial hemp as long as it meets the standards outlined in the Farm Bill. The bill passed by the House of Representatives states, “To amend the Controlled Substances Act to exclude industrial hemp from the definition of marihuana, and for other purposes” (House of Representatives, Bill 525). Prior to the passing of this bill, farmers were not allowed to produce industrial hemp. The research problem for this study focused on organizations' inability to derive strategic value from the law due to the lack of integration between legal strategy and business strategy. The purpose of this study was to build consensus among in-house general counsel working across business industries in the United States with regard to techniques that will alter unreceptive managerial viewpoints toward the strategic value of law within the corporate setting. Law undergirds the capitalist system and is “at the interface” of business and social relationships
but remains largely walled off from many traditional approaches to management education,
scholarship, and practice. Although a simple definition of law is “enforceable rules between
individuals and individuals and society,” law is also amedium bywhich relationships among and
obligations between management and internal and external stakeholders are negotiated and
