Assorted records of the county and circuit courts discarded when the old courthouse was razed, ca. 1955. Included are estate appraisals, school house plans, wolf scalp claims and oaths of allegiance. Also included in this collection is accession 0473, composed of photo reproduction of marriages, 1806-1850, and the Register of Free Negroes, 1838-1860.

The Nancy Murray Mann papers consist of correspondences, speeches in various paper formats, newspaper clippings, government publications, photographs, copies of Mann’s passport, land deeds, and research notes from Ben Riley, a Marshall University graduate student from 1983-1985. The focus of the collection primarily covers Mann’s political and social activities, particularly her political involvement during the 1928 presidential campaign for Herbert Hoover and her subsequent work during his administration. Several of her letters are addressed to President Hoover; however almost of the responses come from his secretary Lawrence Richey. Causing The Conditions Of One's Own Defense: A Study In The Limits Of Theory In Criminal Law Doctrine, Paul H. Robinson

One widely-stated goal of criminal law theory is to create the set of rules that best implements our collective sense of justice. To reach this goal, the theorist continuously adjusts his theory so that it generates rules that better reflect our fundamental notions of justice. These rules, moreover, must function as workable doctrine, which in the context of criminal law means precise statutory provisions. It is this process of theoretical refinement and translation that is the topic of this article. Can good theory generate results that approximate our collective sense of justice?
