Impacting Queer Trans-Migrations In Mexico: A Case Study Of Civil Society Organization Casa Frida Refugio Lgbt+, Leticia Morales

Master's Theses

Mexico has historically been known as an emigration or transit country. In this context, civil society organizations have played pivotal roles in addressing the voids in support for migrants. Among these organizations, Casa Frida Refugio LGBT stands out as a significant service provider, specifically for LGBT+ migrants. This study engages in a qualitative case study analysis of the organization Casa Frida, drawing from interviews conducted with nine LGBTQ+ migrants and refugees, personal observations, and Casa Frida’s website and social media accounts. The research seeks to answer two central questions: Firstly, what role does an LGBT+ specific service provider like Casa …

Vrouwenwerk | Beyondtheglassceiling: Educate, Empower, Reimagine, Malou Lena Julia Desplenter

Master's Theses

In contemporary society, social media platforms have emerged as powerful tools for advocacy and activism. This thesis explores the potential of Instagram in raising awareness and fostering dialogue around workplace equity for women in Belgium. Inspired by influential women's advocacy accounts, I embarked on a journey to fill a noticeable gap in the digital landscape – the absence of Belgian-centric content addressing workplace empowerment for women. Grounded in the unique intersections of Belgian national policies, European Union directives, and global socio-economic dynamics, this capstone delves into the multifaceted challenges faced by Belgian women in the workplace.

Through critical historical analysis …

A Critical-Inclusive Approach To Instructing On Genocide Education In The United States: Delivering An Equally Critical And Inclusive Approach To Professional Development, Cassidy S. Ernst

Master's Projects and Capstones

This paper presents a new approach to teaching the preconditions for genocide. Bringing together a number of theoretical insights from recent research, it focuses on the pedagogical value of a critical inclusive approach to genocide education. Such an approach incorporates persecuted groups commonly excluded from educational narratives, such as the experiences of homosexuals during the Holocaust. It also places genocide education within a wider framework focused on prevention and advocacy. Through utilizing a critical-inclusive approach to genocide education in the classroom, youth will be equipped with a stronger conception of genocide, genocidal ideologies, and measures that can be taken to …

Fourthspace: The Role Of Active Social Inclusion In The Workforce Entry Of Syrian Refugees In Scandinavia, Anisa Abeytia May 2023

Fourthspace: The Role Of Active Social Inclusion In The Workforce Entry Of Syrian Refugees In Scandinavia, Anisa Abeytia

Master's Theses

The 2015 displacement of Syrian refugees into Scandinavian countries provoked a refugee integration policy adjustment that focused on workforce and higher education entry. It is a policy approach that requires attention on barriers to workforce entry to ensure effective policy implementation. This article provides insight into the larger, often overlooked barriers of Eurocentrism and historical biases on refugee labor integration and provides policy solutions to reduce their impact. Active social inclusion (ASI) and Fourthspace are introduced as a framework to reduce biases to workforce entry and integration time barriers faced by Syrian refugees. ASI can provide mechanisms to increase access …

Central Americans At A Crossroads: Asylum Seekers’ Testimonios Of Mental Health After Detention And Family Separation, Corie E. Schwabenland Garcia Dec 2022

Central Americans At A Crossroads: Asylum Seekers’ Testimonios Of Mental Health After Detention And Family Separation, Corie E. Schwabenland Garcia

Master's Theses

Though Central American asylum seekers are presently hypervisible in the U.S. consciousness, this population continues to be inadequately understood or cared for. Discussion of this population often presents them as a helpless and damaged population, in need of saving, fixing, or shelter -- beyond their trauma, they cease to exist. This qualitative study utilizes first-person testimonio methodology to understand the psychological experiences of Central American migrants seeking asylum in the United States, the stressors they face, and the mental health support that can and should be provided to them. Their stories speak to a space of sociopolitical precarity in the …

Recommendations For Sustainable Tourism In Patagonia: An Exploratory Analysis Of Sustainable Tourism In Costa Rica, The Nordic Region, And Thailand’S Communities, Julia K. Lowery

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis explores different levels of governance and its role towards actualizing sustainable tourism in Patagonia. With the growing threat of climate change, international destinations such as Patagonia are looking to continue building their tourism industries in a sustainable way. Through analyzing case studies of national governance in Costa Rica, multi-national governance in the Nordic region, and community-based tourism in Thailand, we can better understand how each form of governance has the potential to create a sustainable tourism industry. With this understanding of successful governance in my case studies, as well as understanding the historical and political forces that have …

The Dilemma Of The Sum Of Us, James Taylor Jan 2022

The Dilemma Of The Sum Of Us, James Taylor

Journal of Interdisciplinary Perspectives and Scholarship

In this essay, James Taylor raises many questions about the familiarity of McGhee’s work as well as its reception in the public. In his essay, The Dilemma of The Sum of Us, Taylor ponders why McGhee’s work is so widely embraced and critically acclaimed when there have been many researchers and writers who have shared similar arguments before. His analysis covers works by Gunnar Myrdal among others and he explores how mainstream writers often succeed through “intellectual appeals to white liberal sentimentality”.

Dismantling The Zero-Sum Game To Co-Create A New Community With Solidarity Dividends And No Prisons, Daniela Dominguez

Journal of Interdisciplinary Perspectives and Scholarship

Heather McGee’s The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together (2021), provides a framework for understanding how racist ideologies and profit interests drive disadvantaged white individuals to reinforce the hegemony of white and wealthy Americans. This response paper ties McGee’s conceptualization of zero-sum thinking to the carceral space.

Voter Suppression Undermines Public Health For All, Erin Grinshteyn, Laura Chyu, Roman Pabayo Jan 2022

Voter Suppression Undermines Public Health For All, Erin Grinshteyn, Laura Chyu, Roman Pabayo

Journal of Interdisciplinary Perspectives and Scholarship

In the US, policies have actively suppressed the voices of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) while amplifying their oppressors’ voices. In spite of multiple constitutional amendments to guarantee access to the right to vote for those who initially were deprived of this right, attacks on this civil liberty have persisted. While some states have expanded access to voting rights in the past year, many others have made voting more difficult and some states have had a mixed approach of making voting easier in some ways and harder in others. This continued interest in creating systems in which it …

What Us?, Amanda Parris Jan 2022

What Us?, Amanda Parris

Journal of Interdisciplinary Perspectives and Scholarship

McGhee (2021) concludes the introduction to The Sum of Us by declaring that she is “fundamentally a hopeful person, because [she knows] that decisions made the world as it is and that better decisions can change it” (p. xxiii). In this brief response I want to take on two problematic aspects of McGhee’s declaration, her hope and her voluntarism. I use an Afropessimistic lens so that we might, as Frank B. Wilderson III (2020) urges, make some of McGhee’s book “more dangerous to the U.S. and the world” (p. 250).

Reflecting On Heather Mcghee’S The Sum Of Us Through A South African Lens, Marthinus Van Loggerenberg Jan 2022

Reflecting On Heather Mcghee’S The Sum Of Us Through A South African Lens, Marthinus Van Loggerenberg

Journal of Interdisciplinary Perspectives and Scholarship

A South African native living in the USA explores and examines the essence of The Sum of Us by contemplating three post-Apartheid realizations in context of structural racism in the US: the illusion of being “born free”, the value of the philosophy of Ubuntu (“I am because we are”), and the role of respect in addressing racism. Ideas around shared narratives, reconciliation, mutual understanding, human value and freedom as something to be strived for, are denoted in relation to dismantling systemic racism for the sake of future generations in the US.

Own Goal Politics In The United States, Keally Mcbride

Journal of Interdisciplinary Perspectives and Scholarship

This essay explores the possibility that understanding how self-defeating racial political sentiments are in the United States will not necessarily change the public’s behavior. Drawing from the rich history of political thought, we can see that the desire for domination may be stronger than the drive for equality and/or freedom.
