Design Of A Capability And Maturity Model For The Development Of Trustworthy Adm Systems Based On Principled Ai, Daniel Varona Cordero Feb 2022

Design Of A Capability And Maturity Model For The Development Of Trustworthy Adm Systems Based On Principled Ai, Daniel Varona Cordero

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Automatic decision-making (ADM) systems have permeated every sphere of society where a large amount of data is managed to fulfill prediction/classification needs. The enhanced capabilities ADM systems have brought into their applied sciences conditioned their evolution to more complex and less transparent machine learning algorithms and models (MLA & M). Nowadays, dissimilar predictions, or suggested decisions supported by MLA & M are found to be misleading, or discriminatory resulting in heated academic and public debates since these MLA & M are being applied in socially and politically sensitive areas such as crime prevention, justice management, among others. Thus, there exists …

Comparison Of Geosmin And 2-Methylisoborneol Removal By Conventional Ozonation And Co-Treatment Of Potassium Ferrate And Peroxymonosulfate, Zhaoran Xin Oct 2021

Comparison Of Geosmin And 2-Methylisoborneol Removal By Conventional Ozonation And Co-Treatment Of Potassium Ferrate And Peroxymonosulfate, Zhaoran Xin

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) are two common compounds that cause taste and odor problems in water. This study compares geosmin and 2-MIB removal from water by conventional ozonation, ferrate and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation processes. The effects of initial O3 doses, H2O2/O3 ratios, and pH on the removal efficiency of geosmin and 2-MIB were evaluated for ozonation. The addition of H2O2 and alkaline condition increased the removal efficiency by ozonation. A Box-Behnken Design was applied to study the influence of ferrate and PMS dosage and pH on the removal of geosmin. It …

Automated Image Interpretation For Science Autonomy In Robotic Planetary Exploration, Raymond Francis Aug 2014

Automated Image Interpretation For Science Autonomy In Robotic Planetary Exploration, Raymond Francis

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Advances in the capabilities of robotic planetary exploration missions have increased the wealth of scientific data they produce, presenting challenges for mission science and operations imposed by the limits of interplanetary radio communications. These data budget pressures can be relieved by increased robotic autonomy, both for onboard operations tasks and for decision- making in response to science data.

This thesis presents new techniques in automated image interpretation for natural scenes of relevance to planetary science and exploration, and elaborates autonomy scenarios under which they could be used to extend the reach and performance of exploration missions on planetary surfaces.

Applicability Of A Picosecond Laser For Micro-Polishing Of Metallic Surfaces, Abdullah Mohammad Khalid Hafiz Aug 2013

Applicability Of A Picosecond Laser For Micro-Polishing Of Metallic Surfaces, Abdullah Mohammad Khalid Hafiz

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

An increasing number of recent technological advancements is linked to the adoptions of ultra-short pulsed picosecond (ps) lasers in various material processing applications. The superior capability of this laser is associated with precise control of laser-material interaction resulted from extremely short interaction time. In this context, the present study explored the applicability of a ps laser in laser micro-polishing (LµP) of Inconel 718 (IN718) and AISI H13 tool steel. The melting regime ‒ a mandatory phase for LµP ‒ was determined experimentally by the variation of focal offset to attain desired laser fluence. The finite element formulation of heat transfer …

Electrohydrodynamic Enhancement Of Heat Transfer And Mass Transport In Gaseous Media, Bulk Dielectric Liquids And Dielectric Thin Liquid Films, Seyed Reza Mahmoudi May 2012

Electrohydrodynamic Enhancement Of Heat Transfer And Mass Transport In Gaseous Media, Bulk Dielectric Liquids And Dielectric Thin Liquid Films, Seyed Reza Mahmoudi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Controlling transport phenomena in liquid and gaseous media through electrostatic forces has brought new important scientific and industrial applications. Although numerous EHD applications have been explored and extensively studied so far, the fast-growing technologies, mainly in the semiconductor industry, introduce new challenges and demands. These challenges require enhancement of heat transfer and mass transport in small scales (sometimes in molecular scales) to remove highly concentrated heat fluxes from reduced size devices. Electric field induced flows, or electrohydrodynamics (EHD), have shown promise in both macro and micro-scale devices.

Several existing problems in EHD heat transfer enhancements were investigated in this thesis. …
