Transverse Anderson Localization In Optical Fibers: High-Quality Wave Transmission And Novel Lasing Applications, Behnam Abaie Dec 2018

Transverse Anderson Localization In Optical Fibers: High-Quality Wave Transmission And Novel Lasing Applications, Behnam Abaie

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

In this dissertation, transverse Anderson localization (TAL) of light mediated by disordered optical fibers is exploited for high-quality optical wave transmission and novel random lasing applications. En route, we first establish a powerful numerical platform for detailed investigation of TAL optical fibers (TALOF). Our approach is based on a modal perspective as opposed to beam propagation method (BPM) which was primarily used in the previous studies of TAL in disordered optical fibers. The versatile numerical tools developed in our simulations result in a potent methodology for simulation of TALOFs; the result is a fast and effective algorithm which can be …

Effective Magnetic And Electric Response Of Composite Materials, Mona Hassan Alsaleh Nov 2018

Effective Magnetic And Electric Response Of Composite Materials, Mona Hassan Alsaleh

Doctoral Dissertations

Metamaterials (MMs) are nanocomposite materials consisting of metal-dielectric resonators much smaller in size than the wavelength of the incident light. Common examples of metamaterials are based on split ring resonators (SRRs), parallel wires or strips and fishnet structures. These types of materials are designed and fabricated in order to provide unique optical responses to the incident electromagnetic radiation that are not available in naturally existing materials. The MMs can exhibit unusual properties such as strong magnetism at terahertz (THz) and optical frequencies. Additionally, negative index materials (NIMs) can provide negative index of refraction which can be used in many applications …

Multidimensional Feature Engineering For Post-Translational Modification Prediction Problems, Norman Mapes Jr. Nov 2018

Multidimensional Feature Engineering For Post-Translational Modification Prediction Problems, Norman Mapes Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

Protein sequence data has been produced at an astounding speed. This creates an opportunity to characterize these proteins for the treatment of illness. A crucial characterization of proteins is their post translational modifications (PTM). There are 20 amino acids coded by DNA after coding (translation) nearly every protein is modified at an amino acid level. We focus on three specific PTMs. First is the bonding formed between two cysteine amino acids, thus introducing a loop to the straight chain of a protein. Second, we predict which cysteines can generally be modified (oxidized). Finally, we predict which lysine amino acids are …

They're Only Nuclear Weapons: An Exploratory Analysis Of Safety Climate Within The Nuclear Enterprise, Brandon M. Clements Mar 2018

They're Only Nuclear Weapons: An Exploratory Analysis Of Safety Climate Within The Nuclear Enterprise, Brandon M. Clements

Theses and Dissertations

By possessing nuclear weapons, the United States Air Force is inherently exposed to extreme safety concerns. With multiple setbacks in recent years (e.g., unauthorized transport of nuclear weapons, cheating scandals, and career dissatisfaction), some have begun to wonder how safe the nuclear enterprise truly is. Building upon the concept of safety climate, this study explores safety climate constructs and trends associated with current nuclear maintenance safety climate survey data.

Application Of Machine Learning On Fracture Interference, Dennis Wayne Chamberlain Jr. Jan 2018

Application Of Machine Learning On Fracture Interference, Dennis Wayne Chamberlain Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

A method has been developed that locates and determines well-to-well hydraulic fracture interference (frac-hit) in shale plays using hard data. This method uses Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) with designated parameters and target outputs in conjunction with graphs of gas flowrate, tubing pressure, and cumulative gas prediction. The method was created to address the significant increase in frac-hit occurrences due to the infill wells being completed in shale plays. The production data of the well is first cleaned to eliminate outliers in the initial timeframe of the well and periods of no production so that the ANN model can be accurately …
