Nursing Home Study- Culminating Project Final Report, Ed Hale

Fire Protection Engineering: Culminating Experience Project Reports

This project report is a component of the culminating project required by the California Polytechnic State University, Master of Science, Fire Protection Engineering program. The purpose is to demonstrate the student’s comprehensive knowledge, skill, and ability to evaluate fire and life safety engineering principles utilizing both prescriptive and performance- based design as applied to the built environment. The student project building is a two-story, 78-bed, federally funded, government owned, skilled nursing facility with 90% of the occupants being mobility impaired.

The project building was designed and constructed using prescriptive codes. Fire and life safety structural components, means of egress, fire …

Fire And Life Safety Analysis- College Campus Building, Jacob Ludeman Mar 2018

Fire And Life Safety Analysis- College Campus Building, Jacob Ludeman

Fire Protection Engineering: Culminating Experience Project Reports

A Fire and Life Safety Analysis was performed as an academic exercise as part of the MS Fire Protection Engineering Program of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. The project is a culminating report with regards to prescriptive based and performance based aspects for the fire and life safety analysis of a project building. These analyses were performed on a building located on a college campus in Southern California and is to remain nameless upon the request of the owner and architect. The building is in the School of Physical Sciences at the University it resides. The building houses …

Maumus Center- Fire Protection Engineering Analysis, Tyler Mobley Jun 2017

Maumus Center- Fire Protection Engineering Analysis, Tyler Mobley

Fire Protection Engineering: Culminating Experience Project Reports

This report is a fire protection engineering analysis of the Maumus Center, a science center and planetarium, in Arabi, Louisiana. The objective of this analysis is to outline the code defined requirements and to confirm the minimum level of safety from fire is attained. Analyzed in the report are the design requirements prescribed in the adopted building and life safety codes, and the performance of the prescribed design. The prescriptive review addresses the building construction in regards to fire protection, the means of egress, the water‐based fire suppression system, and the fire alarm system. The performance review incorporates the goals …

Technical Area 3 - 40; Physics Building- Fire And Life Safety Analysis, Parker Fellows Mar 2016

Technical Area 3 - 40; Physics Building- Fire And Life Safety Analysis, Parker Fellows

Fire Protection Engineering: Culminating Experience Project Reports

A Fire Protection Engineering Analysis was performed on TA‐3‐0040, Physics Building at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The goal of the analysis has two parts; first, to examine the buildings fire protection features from a code based prescriptive analysis and second, to examine the building and fire protection features using a performance based design analysis.

Building 40 is a 2 story structure approximately 187,000 square feet. The building was constructed in the mid‐1950s with a first floor, basement, partial sub‐basement, and various mezzanines. Originally, this building was constructed as a non‐combustible type IIB structure according …

Comprehensive Fire Protection And Life Safety Evaluation Of The Robotic Manufacturing Science And Engineering Laboratories (Rmsel) Facility, Tomas M. Sanchez Jun 2015

Comprehensive Fire Protection And Life Safety Evaluation Of The Robotic Manufacturing Science And Engineering Laboratories (Rmsel) Facility, Tomas M. Sanchez

Fire Protection Engineering: Culminating Experience Project Reports

A comprehensive fire protection and life safety evaluation has been performed for the Robotic Manufacturing Science and Engineering Laboratory (RMSEL) at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). The evaluation considered both prescriptive and performance based aspects. Current codes, such as the 2012 International Building Code and the 2013 version of NFPA 13 – Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, are generally the basis for the prescriptive evaluation even though they are not the code of record for the building. Use of current codes for this evaluation is mostly for academic reasons. Nevertheless, the facility is generally compliant with the provisions of …

Fire Protection And Life Safety Engineering Analysis- Center For Science And Mathematics, Orelvis Gonzalez Cruz Mar 2015

Fire Protection And Life Safety Engineering Analysis- Center For Science And Mathematics, Orelvis Gonzalez Cruz

Fire Protection Engineering: Culminating Experience Project Reports

The Life Safety and Fire Protection systems in Cal Poly’s Center for Science and Mathematics (CSM) were analyzed and evaluated in this project, according to the requirements of the applicable codes and pertinent standards. The evaluation was conducted through a prescriptive-based approach, in conjunction with a performance-based approach. On one hand, the prescriptive-based approach considered the analysis of the Structural Fire Protection and Means of Egress in the building and the existing Fire Detection/Alarm and Fire Suppression Systems. On the other hand, the performance-based approach included an Egress Analysis, which assessed the Required Safe Egress Time (RSET) and the Available …

Fire And Life Safety Analysis Of The Bonderson Engineering Projects Center, Brian Sackett Jun 2014

Fire Protection Engineering: Culminating Experience Project Reports

As part of the requirements for the Degree of Masters of Science in Fire Protection Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, a prescriptive and performance based design analysis was conducted for the Bonderson Engineering Projects Center building (Cal Poly campus). The purpose of this analysis was to review the Bonderson Engineering Projects Center’s compliance with applicable and recognized fire and building codes with regards to its fire protection systems and features. The fire protection systems and features analyzed in this report include: 1) Egress Systems, 2) Structural Fire Protection, 3) Fire Detection and Alarm Systems, 4) Fire …

Design Analysis Of An Air Force Fuel Cell Maintenance Hangar, Andrew Carmean Jun 2014

Design Analysis Of An Air Force Fuel Cell Maintenance Hangar, Andrew Carmean

Fire Protection Engineering: Culminating Experience Project Reports

A Fuel Cell Maintenance Hangar (FCMH) was constructed in 2013 based on a 2012 design; Figure 1.1.1 is a rendering shown below. This report evaluates the design for life safety, and property protection systems. The facility was designed based on Air Force standard prescriptive methods; the resultant design is compared to minimum prescriptive methods and to as-built drawings. In addition, the property protection design criteria were evaluated by simulating the maximum expected design fire in a hangar bay 1 using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). Section 1 consists of a general overview of the FCMH including descriptions of the facility and …

Fire And Life Safety Report- Agricultural Sciences Building- Cal Poly, Jonathan Schram

Fire Protection Engineering: Culminating Experience Project Reports

The purpose of this fire and life safety analysis is to provide a conclusion on whether the Agricultural Sciences Building (ASB) meets fire safety goals. The primary fire safety goal is to provide building occupants a safe environment during fire conditions. This goal can be achieved by protecting the occupants not intimate with the initial fire development and improving survivability of those occupants intimate with the initial fire development. A prescriptive-based design approach and a performance-based design approach are used to evaluate building safety. The prescriptive-based approach is used to evaluate the building's structural fire protection systems, fire detection and …
