Sand and gravel deposits, one of the most common natural resources, are used as aggregates mostly by the construction industry, and their extraction contributes significantly to a region's economy. Thus, it is critical to locate sand and gravel deposits, and evaluate their quantity and quality safely and quickly. However, information on aggregate resources is generally only available from conventional two-dimensional (2-D) geologic maps, and direct field measurements for quality analysis at outcrops are time consuming and are often not possible due to safety concerns, or simply because exposures are too difficult to access. In this study, we presented a methodology …

The CarajaÂs National Forest contains some of the largest iron ore deposits in the world. The majority of the minerals are found below a plant community known as Savana Metalo fila, or ªCangaº, which represents only 3% of the landscape within the CarajaÂs National Forest (CNF). The aim of our study was to understand the diversity of community of non-volant small mammals in the two predominant vegetation types: Ombrophilous Forest and Canga, and to examine how mining impacts these communities. Sampling was conducted from January 2010 to August 2011 in 11 sampling sites divided by the total area of Canga …

The success of the petroleum industry at all levels depend largely on petroleum engineers’ awareness and access to relevant information for making sound Exploration and Production decisions. This study investigated the information seeking behaviour of Petroleum Engineers in selected companies in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. A survey design was adopted using questionnaire as the instrument for collecting primary data from 250 petroleum engineers randomly selected from four oil companies. Data gathered were analysed using frequencies, simple percentages and mean score count. Results showed that petroleum engineers spent time seeking health and safety information, oil and gas E&P information, …
The Figure Of Bitu-Man, Paul Royster
The Figure Of Bitu-Man, Paul Royster
UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications
The ominously imposing figure in the above illustration is “the Syncrude bird deterrent device, locally known as ‘Bitu-man’.” He stands (or stood—the original image was from the late 1970s) in the tailings pond of the Syncrude Canada Ltd. oil sands mining operation along the Athabasca River near Fort McMurray in northeastern Alberta. That operation surface mines (i.e., strip mines) bitumen-impregnated sand, processes it with hot water and steam, and discharges the liquid effluent or “tailings” into a pond covering roughly 3000 hectares (11 square miles). (Google Map coordinates: 56.9°N, -111.3° W). Residue bitumen collects on the surface and poses a …
Development And Validation Of A Model For Granular Material Volume Measurements, Pourya Fasounaki
Development And Validation Of A Model For Granular Material Volume Measurements, Pourya Fasounaki
Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Keeping inventory record of packed grains in silos poses challenges since the bulk material’s different segments do not discharge uniformly, leading to formation of random peaks and valleys on the surface. To facilitate obtaining accurate volume measurement of the grains by taking into account this non-linear behavior on the surface, laser or plumb-bob level-sensing devices are employed at different part of the surface to probe the level of material under those regions.
The main goals of this research is to study the behavior of granular material in silo while discharging downward and by doing so, differentiate certain flow patterns formed …
Sustainable Mining: Trends And Opportunities, James L. Hendrix
Sustainable Mining: Trends And Opportunities, James L. Hendrix
Papers in Sustainable Mining
Sustainable development integrates economic, environmental and social considerations in order to improve the lives of the current generation and ensure that future generations will have adequate resources and opportunities. Sustainable mining is not a new approach or concept in resource consumption. It is a holistic approach for dealing with a complex, interlinked set of factors that determine the net societal worth of a project. A holistic approach to phosphate beneficiation gives us opportunities for the improvement of economic results through reactant and waste minimization. It also gives direction for continued research thrusts to solve the problems associated with the clay …

Over the past fifteen years there has been significant interest in the concepts of sustainable development and mining. Many governments, mining con~panies and non-government organizations have embraced the concepts of sustainable development. One concept generated from the ideas stemming from sustainable mining is that of 'green gold'. Similar to sustainable mining, green gold's meaning is defined by the originator.
