Coal gangue serves as a critical material for landfilling and reclamation in the subsidence areas of coal mines. However, due to its rough textures and poor water-holding capacity, soils reconstructed using coal gangue exhibit somewhat different pore structures and water-salt transport from undisturbed soils. To explore the changes in the pore structure of the reconstructed soils and their effects on water and salt transport, this study analyzed the differences in the pore structures between four samples from undisturbed soils, the overburden, mud-gangue mixtures, and gangue using CT scanning and image analysis. Under the research background of resource utilization of solid wastes in the arid and semiarid regions, a new curing material was developed with the coal wastes (such as the coal gangue (CG) and coal metakaolin (CMK)), the carbide slag (CS) that is a waste material readily available in the arid region, and the ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The filling technology is an important part of green mining. The low-carbon environmental-friendly filling materials with low costs in research and development and reliable performance are critical for the development of filling technologies. A large amount of coal gangue generated during coal production and processing is piled up on the surface, which not only causes land occupation and soil erosion, but also causes geological disasters such as landslides and debris flows. So it has a serious impact on the ecological environment of the mining area. The cumulative stockpile of coal gangue in China has exceeded 6 billion tons, accounting for 13000 hectares of land. In order to make full use of coal gangue generated in coal mining and support the carbon neutral policy, the road section K128+573–K128+740 of Anshao Highway (Anhua-shaoyang, Hunan Province)was filled by coal gangue, and the embankment slope was enhanced by gabion net. The basic characteristics of coal gangue were obtained by its chemical composition and gradation, and shear characteristics of gabion reinforced coal gangue were tested by large-scale direct shearing instrument. In order to study the indicating effect of illite for coalification and sedimentary environments, the Jurassic coal seam gangue in Jingxi coalfield of North China was taken as the research object. X-ray diffraction(XRD) and X-ray fluorescence(XRF) were used to determine the mineral composition and chemical composition of the gangue sandwiched in the coal seam gangue. The mineralogical characteristics and genesis of illite in the gangue were studied. The results indicated that the intra-seam partings are mainly composed of illite, chlorite and quartz, followed by small amount of calcite and albite. The illite has an average proportion of 62.92%. Taken the unweathered coal gangues obtained from the Jurassic coalbed of Bulianta mine and the Car-boniferous-Permian coalbed of Baode mine located in Shendong mining area as the research subjects, the dissolution characteristics of organic matter in two kinds of coal gangues were studied comparatively through soaking experiments, and combined with three-dimensional fluorescence spectrometry and parallel factor analysis. It is significant for the underground reservoir to study mechanism of water treatment in coal mining areas.
