Rock Bolt Corrosion - An Experimental Study, Naj Aziz, P Craig, Jan Nemcik, Faisal Hai

Faisal I Hai

The effect of long term exposure of full size bolts to corrosive environments is presented. A special test rig was used to test four bolts under different loading conditions. Four X-grade identical profile bolts, each 21·7 mm core diameter (23·7 mm full diameter) were subjected to prolonged corrosion testing using acid sulphate water. The pH value of the circulated water varied between 3·4 and 4·3. The corrosion exposure test period lasted 3·5 years. Two bolts were axially loaded to 10 t and 20 t force respectively, the third bolt was subjected to a 360 Nm torsion load and the fourth …

Microbeam Radiation Therapy: A Monte Carlo Study Of The Influence Of The Source, Multislit Collimator, And Beam Divergence On Microbeams, Heidi Nettelbeck, George Takacs, Michael Lerch, Anatoly Rosenfeld Nov 2013

Microbeam Radiation Therapy: A Monte Carlo Study Of The Influence Of The Source, Multislit Collimator, And Beam Divergence On Microbeams, Heidi Nettelbeck, George Takacs, Michael Lerch, Anatoly Rosenfeld

Michael L.F. Lerch

Microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) is a new oncology method currently under development for the treatment of inoperable pediatric brain tumors. Monte Carlo simulation, or the computational study of radiation transport in matter, is often used in radiotherapy to theoretically estimate the dose required for treatment. However, its potential use in MRT dose planning systems is currently hindered by the significant discrepancies that have been observed between measured and theoretical dose and the PVDR (peak to valley dose ratio). The need to resolve these discrepancies is driven by the desirability of making MRT available to humans in the next few years. …

Neutron Diffraction Study Of The Magnetic Order In Ndmn2ge1.6si0.4, Jianli Wang, Stewart Campbell, John Cadogan, A J Studer, Rong Zeng, S. Dou Jul 2013

Neutron Diffraction Study Of The Magnetic Order In Ndmn2ge1.6si0.4, Jianli Wang, Stewart Campbell, John Cadogan, A J Studer, Rong Zeng, S. Dou

Jianli Wang

Here we report a detailed investigation of NdMn2Ge1.6Si0.4; this forms part of our investigation of the magnetic order across the NdMn2Ge2−xSix (x = 0–2.0) series by magnetometry, x-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction over the temperature range 6–465 K. On decreasing the temperature from 465 K, NdMn2Ge1.6Si0.4 exhibits four magnetic transitions: (i) from paramagnetism to intralayer antiferromagnetism AFl at TIntraN ~ 430 K; (ii) AFl to canted ferromagnetism Fmc at TInterC ~ 330 K; (iii) Fmc to conical magnetic ordering …

Statistical Indicators For Local Government Areas: A Case Study Of The Shoalhaven Lga, 1997, Nell Stetner-Houweling, David Steel, Greg Pullen Jun 2013

Statistical Indicators For Local Government Areas: A Case Study Of The Shoalhaven Lga, 1997, Nell Stetner-Houweling, David Steel, Greg Pullen

Professor David Steel

Decision makers and planers need to have relevant and reliable information to give a picture of how different areas are developing economically and socially. However, there is a perceived lack of timely and easily accessible data at the Local Government Area (LGA) level. This study produced a statistical profile of the Shoalhaven (LGA) by developing a conceptual framework, which represents the key economic, social, and population characteristics of the LGA. The statistical data available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) at the level of the LGA, was investigated and summarised. Other sources of information available to create a statistical …

A Study Of Rock Bolting Failure Modes, Chen Cao, Jan Nemcik, Ting Ren, Naj Aziz Apr 2013

A Study Of Rock Bolting Failure Modes, Chen Cao, Jan Nemcik, Ting Ren, Naj Aziz

Chen Cao

Rock bolting has advanced rapidly during the past 4 decades due to a better understanding of load transfer mechanisms and advances made in the bolt system technology. Bolts are used as permanent and temporary support systems in tunnelling and mining operations. A review of has indicated that three systems of reinforcement devices have evolved as part of rock bolt and ground anchor while the rock is not generally thought of as being a component of the reinforcement system. A classification of rock bolting reinforcement systems is presented, followed by the fundamental theory of the load transfer mechanism. The failure mode …

A Study On The Suitability Of Cable Models To Simulate Switching Transients In A 132 Kv Underground Cable, Muhamad Zalani Daud, P Ciufo, S Perera Dec 2012

A Study On The Suitability Of Cable Models To Simulate Switching Transients In A 132 Kv Underground Cable, Muhamad Zalani Daud, P Ciufo, S Perera

Dr Philip Ciufo

Switching transients resulting from the energisation of high voltage cable systems may have a significant effect on both the cables being switched as well as the power system components in the vicinity. The impacts of these transients on such cables are measured based on the stress arising as a result of the voltage and current peaks and the frequency of oscillatory transients. These quantities are typically obtained from a simulation by using a suitable cable model, normally with the capability to predict the transient behaviour in the range up to several 10 kHz. To obtain a cable model that enables …

Calibrating Engineering Graduate Capabilities Against Assessment Tasks: A Preliminary Study, Long Nghiem, Maureen Bell Dec 2012

Calibrating Engineering Graduate Capabilities Against Assessment Tasks: A Preliminary Study, Long Nghiem, Maureen Bell

Long D Nghiem

This paper investigated the connection between assessment tasks and graduate capabilities. Surveys conducted as part of this study revealed differences in planning for the development of, and student achievement of, graduate capabilities and that assessment tasks were valuable tools to guide and facilitate the development of intended graduate capabilities. Drawing from the obtained data, a prototype framework for curriculum design was proposed, allowing for better alignment of assessment tasks and graduate capability development in systematic subject design.

Study Of Shear-Stiffened Elastomers, T Tian, W Li, J Ding, G Alici, H Du Nov 2012

Study Of Shear-Stiffened Elastomers, T Tian, W Li, J Ding, G Alici, H Du

Dr Haiping Du

This paper presents a novel shear-stiffened elastomer (SSE) fabricated with a mixture of silicone rubber and silicone oil. A total of four SSE samples were fabricated in this study. Their mechanical and rheological properties under both steady-state and dynamic loading conditions were tested with a parallel plate rheometer. The effects of silicone oil composition, strain amplitude and angular frequency were summarized. When raising the angular frequency in the dynamic shear test, the storage modulus of conventional silicone rubber shows a small increasing trend with the frequency. However, if silicone oil is selected to be mixed with silicone rubber, the storage …

Multi-Disciplinary Engineering Research And Development Skills For Mining - A Case Study, C Cook, S Van Duin, Ian Porter

Christopher Cook

This paper discusses how advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), which is fundamentally reliant on and developed via multi-disciplinary skills, has benefitted non-mining industries, and what lessons can be derived from this experience to benefit the mining industry, particularly underground coal mining. Examples of AMT use in 'conventional' industry, some drawn from the more than 25 years experience in many different industries of the Automation and Robotics team at the University of Wollongong, are described to show typical benefits, risks and opportunities expected in using AMT. Applying AMT to mining brings many unique challenges and this paper expands on these and then …
